Pat Robinson 'Alzheimer's is grounds for divorce'

Today in Some Crazy Person Asked Pat Robertson for Advice, we learn that the firebrand cleric doesn't merely dislike Alzheimer's -- "I hate Alzheimer's," he says -- but he thinks it's totally cool for you to divorce your spouse over it. A man wrote to Pat seeking advice for his friend, whose wife has Alzheimer's and no longer recognizes him. Pat's response, from Tuesday's 700 Club:

"I know it sounds cruel, but if he's going to do something, he should divorce her and start all over again, but make sure she has custodial care and somebody looking after her"

this question about her husband with Alzheimer's, would his response have been the same? I think not.

Hypothetically he might say "It's a cruel thing, but your vows were in sickness and in health, so you must support and take care of him."

a) women must honor and obey, men "can follow their pecker" (since Robertson enthusiastically follows such stereotypes)
b) spouses of either gender should dump the person they swore to live their existence with when they get dementia

10. tired of this. have seen this everywhere and on du often. what robertson said was not offensive

in my book. it was a man whose wife doesnt know him, he wants a life with another. robinson was sensitive saying hard ect.... take care of mate, divorce and live life instead of being dishonest or whatever.

i see nothing wrong with what robertson said.

12. Oh, just stop with the faux disgust. We all know that Alzheimer's is a living death -

- and I happen to agree with Robinson on this. That doesn't mean you turn your back on your sick spouse - you continue to make sure they receive care and comfort. It just gives you permission to continue living when your spouse is mentally deceased if not physically deceased.

Many of us would agree with the patient having the right to choose when to end his/her life Kevorkian style. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with the spouse having the right to choose to live.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. This is one of those times that Robinson's clock is right.
