A real Wall Street takeover threat
Salon has a good article up:

"Hundreds of the young and disenfranchised settle into lower Manhattan to send a message to Wall Street -- and Obama"

Like everyone our age, we're overeducated and unemployed," said Patrick Bruner, a 23-year-old native of Tucson, Arizona who recently migrated to Brooklyn. Bruner said that he and his fellow protestors were prepared to hold the Wall Street square for a long time.

volunteers made stacks of peanut butter sandwiches and distributed slices of pizza donated by people who visited the Occupy Wall Street web page. The demonstration had a spontaneous feeling, but underlying it was an extensive social media network. "This is more than just a feel-good rally," said a young man who declined to give his name, as he made cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches. "We're digging in for a long-term occupation."

1. Some people are making light of this demonstration,
but you have to start somewhere. If I was anywhere in the vicinity, I'd be there.

7. Many are worried about a local repeat of the unrest seen in Arab countries. But remember,
the united, sick-of-it masses =peacefully= overthrew their governments in Egypt, Tunisia, etc.

it going to take masses to shut them down. For all account its peacefully & respectful and the cops look more like herders shepherding those to the sidewalks. On a week day this could shut the place down. Wall St. isn't a very big place, blink and it gone.

10. I said that to my sister who lives out there and she said that the
subway runs under WS and that workers come in from that way so it may not be such a pivotal point as we think. Even so it makes a loud statement.

23. That video is SO important-
because the person caught the elite on the balcony,
sipping champagne and laughing at the kids below.
It needs to go viral.
Even dumb asses tea baggers could recognize themselves
in that moment. Couldn't they?

12. Why else do you move from Arizona to New York to get a job?

Unless he is a music or arts major.

to get a job on WS or because they're a music/arts major?

Really?

I just don't know what to say to that.

18. In conjunction with the other debts we will want them to pay, yes.
Social security, Medicare, income taxes, gas taxes, state taxes, real estate taxes, sales taxes, health care premiums...

How much will be left over to buy a house, a car, save for college for their kids and their retirement?

That is tough because people can barely pay for things now and we are at a pretty low tax rate historically.

20. Young people aren't the ones I "expect" to repay the money the US gov't borrowed
from Social Security. That would be the top 10% who pay the lion's share of income taxes.

Not to mention that sales taxes & health care premiums aren't "debt".

Not to mention that none of that has anything to do with why young people might move to NYC.

25. You know nothing about what is going on with that age group.
There is a growing sub culture amidst us that is invisible,
but growing, none the less.
They are the "lost generation" and many of them
grew up in the 90's thinking that education and college
would assure them at least as good of a life as the homes
they grew up in.
They discovered instead a society that did not value them,
offered them no future, and little to no hope for their futures.

They live in many major cities in communal "squats."
It is only by living together in these "communal squats" that
they can survive.

They pool their money, buy in bulk, depend on "free boxes" for
their material needs and generally share what they have.
They "dumpster dive" and know which days the local bakeries
unload unsold baked goods. They cook meals together
and share.

They have no jobs- or jobs that are so low paying
they can never save a dime- they have no healthcare,
unless they are fortunate enough to have parents with healthcare
and are of the age designated by the HC reform act to be covered
under their parents HC plan. (Thank you Obama)

The movement is global among this age group.

This kid probably went to NY because there are several
such organized communities there- Chicago, Oakland and NY
are among the most populated Squat communities.

How do I know? I have seen it first hand.
My daughter is 24, currently living in a communal artists squat in Berlin.
Before then, she lived in similar places in Chicago and Oakland-
Her friends in LA all live in such places.

Personally- I have encouraged her to stay in Berlin until winter
and then return in the spring.

At least if she needs to see a doctor, she can in Germany.

3. The hurricane starts as a whisper in the wind.
Its pretty telling that this was urecd. To those of you logging onto DU to cause mischief, I have a message for you. We are coming for you. Your arrogance has left you blind. You thought the 2008 was a wave election? Wait till you see what we are going to bring down on you next year. If you'd ever turn off your right wing talk radio and FOX news you would realize that the vast majority of American voters vote independently.

Those voters have a message for you, it's coming. 2012 you are FUCKED!

********* FACT ********* 2011 is one of the least productive sessions of Congress in American history ******** FACT *********

The funny thing about facts, you cannot change them.

Good pizza is absolutely vital to any effective protest.

11. My bet is...
In two weeks this will be forgotten ancient history and nothing at all will have changed.

No, that's not how I WISH it would turn out. Yes, I know we have to start somewhere. I'm not being snarky or flip, I'm just being realistic. The powers that be simply don't care about this weekend camping trip to the big city. Why? Because except for right here on the pages of DU I have heard NOTHING about this from any other source of "news" and "information". As far as the rest of the world, outside the cloistered walls of DU, this "significant protest" doesn't even exist. It's invisible. It never happened. It's a tree falling in the forest that nobody is there to hear.

14. I wouldn't let the MSM detract from this, look at the protest against Iraq and they did nothing.
If you don't get the eye of the MSM, no big whoop, they suck ass. That's why nobody really watches or pays attention to them.

protesters in the area. Is that still true? If so, that would really send a message.
