Fox "Straight News": Paid Sick Leave Is An "Entitlement"

http://mediamatters.org/blog/201109190011

In another installment of Fox's ongoing series bemoaning the purported job-killing effect of regulations, America's Newsroom anchor Martha MacCallum called a new Seattle ordinance requiring paid sick leave for employees another "entitlement" that could put small businesses "under water."

Fox spent last week promoting GOP talking points on regulation, obscuring the myriad public health benefits from the conversation. In this case, paid sick leave for employees -- particularly in the food service industry, where access to such leave is the least accessible -- has obvious public health benefits.

2. I negotiated it, I earned it, you're damn right I'm entitled to it
And, in addition to being good public policy, employers who have their own interests at heart would do well to provide paid sick time to its employees. When employees have to choose between getting better or getting paid, they will often choose to get paid. Even a common cold becomes an occasion of some moment. An employee feeling like he's getting sick decides to come in to work instead of taking a day or two for rest and medication winds up passing the cold around to others at the job. Instead of one person out for a couple of days, an employer can be presented with several workers all sick and miserable. Efficiency and productivity suffer for as long as the cold lasts from the first person who came in because he couldn't afford to take a day off until the last person to whom he passes the cold on gets better. The cold lasts longer with nastier symptoms because of the additional stress of working while sick.

It's a shame that such a simple and enlightened policy would have to imposed, but some employers are so short-sighted and greedy that the rest of the business community has to bring them in line through government ordinance.

Gee, you put that another way, and it doesn't seem like such a "job-killer" now, does it? You don't suppose the folks at Fox are using the public airwaves for anti-public interest, do you?

3. just what I want.
a grill cook/server/busperson/chef/dishwasher et al coming to work sick and making or accidentally touching my food.

Jeeez, at the lousy pay they get it would be far better to pay for a day or two off instead of paying a lawyer to defend a restaraunt against

a lawsuit.
