President Obama's deficit-reduction plan--complete with tax increases on the wealthiest Americans--won high marks from his liberal base encouraged to see Obama back in fighting mode, but the plan is set to hit a brick wall in Congress -- even in the Democratically controlled Senate and the bipartisan super committee.

Moderate Senate Democrats are signaling strong resistance to tax increases in the President's deficit-reduction plan, and the early disapproval within his own party will no doubt give Republicans on the deficit super committee plenty of cover to block any and all revenue-raising aspects of Obama's plan.

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) told reporters Monday night that he's put off by all the talk about increasing taxes when he believes the primary and only goal of the deficit super committee should be finding cuts to hack away at the deficit.

"Tax increases have to come second to cutting," he said. "I was just home over the weekend and that's what we're all talking about."

Schmucks like Nelson provided cover to the Republican fillibusters at times and have always been in the way of progressive change and reform. He embraces the policies of Bush even after the nation soundly rejected them. We would be better off if he joined the Republicans as he provides nothing to the Democrats save disappointment and resistance and uses up one of our seats on the finance committee for pro-bankster BS and the continuation of conservative supply sider tax cut nonsense.

Moreover politically at least we would know where we stand and have solid numbers that we could rely on.

Democrats can be fiscally responsible and explain
how they will correct the deficit situation. It
is like triaging a terrible accident. First they
stop the bleeding, attend to heart conditions, then
move to the other patients.

We must stop the bleeding of jobs. Then they must
get some revenues as well as cuts in spending. The
Pro Business Democrats had better get on board
or they might not be around. They are condemining
themselves to trash heap of history by throwing
the Middle class under the bus. Staying hidden
in Beltway Bubble keeps them from grasping what
is going on in the states.

36. This, I agree with. Nelson has been a constant problem and has prevented passage

of historical policy. I am generally not for democrats primarying democrats, but I make an exception for Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Under no circumstances would I make any other choice. But I was so happy with the tone that President Obama took on Monday that after I stopped wetting my shorts from joy, I contributed to his campaign after purposely holding off. My point is screw so called moderates that think that drawing a line against political terror is bad, screw them. Some like Penn are using words like class warfare and unfair tax increases, absolutely fuck them if they think that way.
