One man who appreciates what Obama has done

A very dear friend had surgery yesterday. As we nervously waited for the outcome, a man sitting near us offered us some snacks. I gladly took a pack of peanut butter crackers. As I opened the wrapper and started munching we struck up a conversation.

His 25-year-old son had been in a horrific wreck over the weekend; the sons' two companions in the car were killed in the crash. (Surgeons are going to be trying to put this kid back together for days from what this gentleman told me.)

"He has a good job, but you know how it is: Insurance through your employer is a thing of the past," he said.

"Yeah, like living wages and pensions, right?" I said.

"Exactly," he answered. "But thanks to Obama, he was able to stay on his mom's policy - you know Obama made it where the kids can stay on til they're 26 - so his medical care isn't going to ruin this kid financially."

He was a very grateful man. A veteran, just a good Tennessee, salt-of-the-earth type happy to tell you that Obama is the reason he can worry about how his son will heal without freaking out over how he will pay for that healing.

So maybe "ObamaCare" is a pejorative to some, but to one family, it is making all the difference.

4. I hope the kid heals quickly - and heals completely

When he turns 26 in a few weeks or months he's on his own and no longer on his mom's health insurance.

He may well find himself without insurance to pay for follow-up physical therapy or chronic pain treatment. And if he has any permanent impairment he may find that he is denied coverage because of it.

But hey 2014 will be here soon enough and if that healthcare reform package really does go into effect and if this kid has enough money he can get health insurance and the fpollow up care he needs then.

I haven't had health insurance in 15 years. Physicals? Bwa-hah-hah-ha!!!!!

I'm on the "Don't Get Sick" plan, but I sure am glad this kid had catastrophic coverage.

Some day maybe we'll have single payer - if we don't all die first :shrug:

8. I'm right there with you

Haven't seen a doctor for nearly 15 years. And I have insurance. $10,000 annual deductible with a co-pay, doctor visits are not covered and the prescription coverage includes only a limited formulary. I have a hearing impairment that is untreated. I'm visually impaired and in serious need of some new prescription lenses. And I need some dental care.

Yes, we need single payer. Meaningful healthcare reform is my line in the sand. I have no good use for the politicians that support single payer until they are elected - and then deem it unworthy of even being considered as an option. Those asshats need to find themselves in my position - or yours - or that of millions more.

From the sound of it, the auto policy limits won't even approach the cost of this kid's care.

That's when his own coverage through his mom - thanks to Obama - kicks in and makes all the difference.

18. Have you compared the minimum BI to the maximum annual benefit on many of the health plans?

I didn't intend for this to become an argument so I'll let you get the last word but
I guess this depends on where you're located. But where I am, the minimum coverage for bodily injury is actually more than the maximum annual benefit on the lowest priced insurance plans.

And I've heard horror stories of getting health insurance companies of paying crash-related medical claims because they want the auto insurer to pay it.

Which doesn't go far in modern medicine for severe trauma.

Health insurance companies always want someone else to pay. In other breaking news, the sky is blue.

In this case, Dad says the health insurance company is covering his son's care.

But something, in this case, is better than nothing.

Those families who benefit from what's been done already will be open to pushing government to help with getting single payer a reality.

Word of mouth and all that - it's all we've got at this point.
