To-do lists grow for for aging Toledo sewers

http://www.toledoblade.com/local/2011/09/19/To-do-lists-grow-for-for-aging-city-sewers-2.html

Work force pressed to pare 600 orders

-snip-

All across town, Toledo as of last week had 598 “pending work orders” for various water, sewer, and drainage problems, including sewer cave-ins, sinkholes, collapsing catch basins, and the like, said David Welch, the city’s commissioner of engineering services.

-snip-

George Robinson, the commissioner of public utilities, said city sewers are cleaned on three-year cycles, and those cleanings usually are accompanied by sending a small television camera through the pipes to check for trouble. But every time those TV inspections turn up a sewer collapse “that’s a new financial problem that we didn’t have planned.”

-snip-

“A major catastrophe is going to cause us some serious problems,” he said.

So if a repair isn’t urgent, the city’s response sometimes is to just monitor the problem and deal with it when resources allow, or scramble when it gets worse.

a 'to-do List' is coming to a city near you (or its already there, tucked into a drawer)

money, money, money

1. Maintenance Postponed
Is a harbinger of worse things to happen down the road. Not a good idea in my opinion. A city that cannot afford to do required maintenance is in trouble.

3. Well, it's FAR more important to protect the exalted status of the 2%ers than it is
to ensure that the Little People(TM) have running water and functioning sewers.
