Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has appointed a “cold case posse” to review information pertaining to President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.

The news was first reported by World Net Daily, an online publication that has doggedly pursued conspiracy theories about the president’s birth.

Sgt. Jesse Spurgin, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the news to The Daily Caller Tuesday.

Spurgin explained that the tough-on-crime Arizona sheriff is tasking the posse with examining documents provided to Arpaio by author Jerome Corsi.

The goal of the inquest “is to determine whether there appears to be enough evidence to move forward with an investigation or — and this is more likely the case — whether another governmental entity might be a better choice to investigate these claims,” Spurgin explained.

“The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office cold case posse consists of 40 non-compensated (volunteer) members,” Spurgin said, “many of whom have professional law enforcement backgrounds.”

my great aunt and uncle were very politically active, strong democrats. My great aunt was secretary to democratic senator Carl Hayden. I am embarrassed for arizona. What the hell happened? Even Goldwater had more sense than what's coming out of arizona today.

In the seventies, I worked at the SSA office in phoenix. many of my fellow employees at that time were hispanic and some native american. In elementary school, there was quite a few hispanic americans. I don't understand the "fear the mexican" coming from arizona today. It's like arizona is on one giant right wing created phobia.
