I'm a redhead and my sperm is just as good as yours

It came out in news reports this week that Cryos, the world's largest sperm bank, has started to turn down donations from redheads because there is so little demand. As a redheaded man myself, I was concerned at this news -- though it really is no surprise to me. Using the unscientific method of trying to hit on girls during my years in high school and college, I was able to determine that demand for sperm from redheaded men was low.

Still, it seems strange that people would completely disregard all of the good qualities of a potential sperm donor based solely on the color of his hair. This is even more confusing because almost everyone seems to love redheaded women. And it seems that nonredheaded women want to become redheads. I have had countless women over the years tell me how much money they've spent trying to get their hair to my particular color.

And look at all the famous redheads the world loves: Nicole Kidman, Ann Margret, and Christina Hendricks are just a few of the actresses who have inspired thousands of women to dye their hair to try to capture some of the glamour and sex appeal of the redheaded woman. It also seems that it's impossible to run a detective agency without running into at least one double-crossing red-haired woman.

Of course, the same is not true of redheaded men. Our list of sex symbols includes Conan O'Brien, Carrot Top, Shaun White, Louis C.K., and Seth Green. Seen any of these on People Magazine's sexiest man alive lists?

and the gene for redheadedness is a remnant of ancient liaisons with Neanderthalers, then it may be that the "caveman syndrome" is in play. Just joking, but who knows what they're thinking at that sperm bank. Perhaps the answer is for ginger men to start their own sperm bank and advertise. Or, as an alternative, they could start doing personal transfers of their genetic materials to all comers (no pun intended).

From what I've seen, though, red-headed men seem to have as much success finding mates as anyone else. I think the danger of the red hair trait dying out is exaggerated by a lot.

...although of the female persuasion, that story jumped out at me as well. The only thing I can think of as to why demand is low, is that there are fewer redheads to begin with. Maybe people ask for donors with similar coloring to themselves and there aren't that many redheads who are using sperm donors?

Otherwise it just seems bizarre, I never thought there was *that* big of a prejudice against redheads!

Red hair is in no danger of disappearing, however, as the genetic trait which causes red hair can skip generations; both parents need not have red hair themselves - just possess the genetic mutation responsible.

As for prejudice...at one time, redheadedness was closely associated with 'Jewishness'; in Spain during the Inquisition, redheads were automatically identified as 'Jewish.'

They're so beautiful. Though I am not a redhead I do carry redhead gene. My great grandmother was a redhead. So were my aunts and several of cousins. Unfortunately I have no children.

When I moved from South Florida to Arkansas it was a culture shock to me! From Hispanic people (dark-haired) to Redheads!! I couldn't believe it ... so many, many redheads here where I live now.

Speaking as the mom of a ginger, red heads usually have very cool personalities and they they stand out from the rest of us non-red heads physically, humor-wise, and persononality-wise.

My daughter was born with red hair, a TOTAL surprise to us since it didn't "run" in our families at all..except for the wannabe's. Or so we thought. Years after her birth, we found out that my (now) ex-husband was the product of an affair...the guy who his mother had hooked up with was a red head. My ex had/has dark brown hair, not an ounce of overt red hair or light skin in him.
And then out popped our little red headed baby!

It wasn't until my ex MIL's affair was uncovered that my ex husband found out at 30 yrs old that the guy who he thought was his bio dad was NOT. Years after that, someone in his family made a comment about my daughters beautiful hair. That person knew about that affair back when it happened. So I made the comment "well, there is a BRANCH of the family we know nothing about". She gave me a sly grin and pretty much said "and that is where it came from".
