Georgia has ruined America's reputation worldwide (pic heavy):
Edited on Thu Sep-22-11 01:02 AM by alp227
The Globe and Mail (Canada):

BBC (UK):

The Guardian (UK):

RTE:

El País (Spain):

Le Monde (France):

Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

The Sydney Morning Herald (Australia):

New Zealand Herald:

Meanwhile, my checks of CBC News (Canada) and The Times of India revealed that the Davis stories there were buried lower in those home pages.

And Georgia sure has tarnished the image of America worldwide.

1. Agree-- the morning after for the US will not be pretty.
After tonight the USA should not be so critical of executions in other countries, especially of those individuals whose convictions are in doubt.

45. I can't agree with that based on the truth, sorry.
If anything, we actually need to be MORE critical of executions in other countries, particularly ones such as Iran, Syria, etc.
Perhaps that way, people here will be able to wake up faster.

3. He was on the gurney for 3.5 hours with the needle in his arm as a "reprieve"
while they took his case to the Supreme Court who refused to listen to it. I think the whole charade was to delay the execution so that the crowds would dissipate. This fucking country is disgusting.

They knew the world was watching.

I didn't realize he was on the gurney that whole time. That's absolutely appalling.
I am so ashamed.

6. Oh, bullshit. Most didn't buy into the innocent lie. How overboard.
The "I didn't do it' card has been played by dozens of death row inmates and then caught on in the mainstream press.
The actual numbers of those fooled are microscopic compared to the world population.

So it is okay to kill a few innocent people?

8. I see. You were there that night?
Actually much of the thinking is not necessarily about whether he was innocent or not, but that there was too much doubt, and this kind of thing is why much of the world has done away with death penalty.

Of course you know the only bullshit is how it has been presented in Georgia. Political executions are hard to shine a true light on. Even in this backwards haven of redneck ignorance.

I sincerely hope the DOJ gets involved in this two decade lynching, and runs through Savannah Justice like Sherman *should* have.

Funny how the South always had a two-tiered justice system.... :grr:

14. The facts the prosecution used to convict him were woefully inadequate.
There were no fingerprints on the murder weapon tying Davis to the gun, no video footage, no forensic evidence. Even the ballistics evidence was less than satisfactory. They relied solely on the testimony of 9 people, seven of whom have recanted, and of the two that are left, one confessed to being the actual shooter.

30. Why do so many DUers so desperately care what Europe etc thinks of the US?
Executing Troy Davis was a travesty, an injustice, and a human rights violation. That's why we should be upset. I do not understand the overweening need for Europe's approval that so many DUers have. They may not have the death penalty, but lots of European countries are far from perfect socialist paradises, either.

39. Of course we do; that's not the same as obsessing over what others think
We should promote justice and be a leader in the world, yes. And we can't do that if we execute innocent people. But we shouldn't do it because we're insecure and we need Europe to think we're cool and progressive, which is the vibe I get around here a lot. It's very trendy to point out America's many flaws in Europe, but as someone who lived in the UK, trust me, they have many of their own problems and aren't in much of a position to point fingers at anyone. No one besides Scandinavia is, really.

43. I mostly agree with that
I think I just take issue with the way DUers lionize Europe/engage in over-the-top apologias for (insert American sin here) when Europe - while it certainly does much better than us in certain respects such as church and state, healthcare, etc - is not the paragon of virtue so many progressive Americans want to paint it as. But this thread wasn't really the appropriate place to make that observation so I apologize for the hijack.

33. Ridiculous. America's reputation was shot long before Mr. Davis was murdered by the state.
It has something to do with the hundreds of thousands of innocents the American military has slaughtered and/or tortured in Bush/Obama's illegal wars.

Foreigners don't respect America - they fear it.

Americans don't respect their government - they fear it.
