Angel Food Ministries closes its doors...

The company that provides discounted groceries to needy families across the country including many across Oklahoma is going out of business.

Angel Food Ministries began 17 years ago in Georgia and grew into a national organization.

The multi-million dollar food non-profit says it will cease operations immediately- blaming the economic downturn since 2008.

Under the Angel Food Ministries program, you buy a box filled with food for half price at participating churches at what the grocery stores would price it.

1. I would recommend SHARE.
My family has used this program for more than twenty-five years. We average about a 40% savings on our food every month.

I live in Northern Illinois, and get my food package through Wisconsin Share. If you look at the website, you will see that other states and regions have Share programs, too. Of course, volunteers keep it going.

2. But I thought that churches and charities would take care of all the hungry.
I guess the charities are going bust because of a lack of contributions and too many needy, and the churches need that money to keep that private jet flying in order for the minister to fly away to those cozy little weekend get-togethers with their mistresses.

11. It began as a SHARE program, but is now operated by The Emergency Food Shelf Network.
The closest Fare For All facility is in Mora.
I did, however, find a facility in Carlton that is associated with SHARE Wisconsin (http://www.sharewi.org)

12. Thank you. The Duluth area is served by the share wisconsin group.
It is actually located in Carlton, MN and is a good program. I thought it was mostly a name change thing.

5. That's sad because I know of a few out-of-work people

who were dependent on Angel Food Ministries to put food on the table for their families. A $30 box could feed a family for over a week.

13. It's surprising how many non-profits exist as vehicles for the founders advancement. Some do good.
Some do bad.

10. Maybe there should be a new magazine...
If one doesn't already exist entitled: "SOLUTIONS" or something. You know, maybe a monthly periodical outlining all 50 states in each issue and what good things are being done in each state along the lines of feeding the poor, housing the homeless, etc...

I have a hunch that there is just a whole bunch of good stuff happening along these lines right now...TODAY and by reading about these victories, both large and small could help too instill enough positive momentum to want and see and (most importantly) CREATE even more of it!!!

I get an email from "Yes" magazine and while I appreciate their efforts and not to take anything away from the good work that they are doing, the articles outline 'good stuff' that happens here and there, scattered throughout the country...I'd like to see ALL states being covered on an on-going basis.
