Academy School District 20 proposes 50-cent-a-ride bus fees

Academy School District 20 is considering a 50-cent per-ride fee for transportation next school year, and plans a public hearing in October, the district announced Wednesday.

The proposal suggests charging choice students slightly more — 60 cents per ride. There would be a $10 one-time fee to cover special cards students would use. Students eligible for free and reduced meals would not have to pay the fee, said District 20 spokeswoman Nanette Anderson.

Routes are adjusted every year as needed, Anderson said, but no changes are expected to how far students walk to bus stops.

Charging for services was recommended by a Transportation Task Force after months of study. The revenue generated by a fee would offset a portion of the cost of transporting nearly 6,500 students in the 23,100-student district.
