Michael Faherty, 76, was found lying face down near an open fire in his living room in Galway, Ireland.

Apart from his body, investigators could find no other damage in the house.

Dr Kieran McLoughlin, the West Galway coroner, said it was the first time in his 25 year career that he had returned a spontaneous combustion verdict, which is believed to be the first in Ireland.

That poor man. I hope he was gone, first.

I saw a documentary once about a woman. I believe from the U.S., who did the same sitting in her chair. They tried to disprove it, but couldn't. Wish I could remember the name!

2. Human body fat can burn very hot and fast. So-called "spontaneous combustion" of humans

has, to my knowledge, always turned out to be body fat fires ignited by some other source, such as the nearby open fire mentioned.
