Rewriting the American death penalty

I was so moved by this and have to agree. I hope someday as a nation we join the rest of the civilized world.

2. He's right.
I've been a little wishy-washy on this in the past (the "exceptions should be made for genuine monsters" meme) but it really is time we stop executions. I didn't know that Dick Gregory was protesting that horrible racist's execution, it obviously didn't get any attention in the news. But he's absolutely right, too.

3. once you allow life imprisonment without parole, it's down to killing for money.
some people seem to think that's a good idea to empower a government to kill its subjects if it finds it profitable to do so.

personally, i find this a horrendous and baffling point of view.

others insist, contrary to evidence, that a life sentence without parole is not much of a deterrent while that death in your sleep is. many insist this applies even for criminals who choose to live in constant fear of torture and/or brutal death at the hands of fellow criminals or of being shot by cops.

and, of course, they all seem convinced that the occassional premeditated murder of a completely innocent citizen is a small price to pay for whatever benefits they think the death penalty provides.
