War! American Family Association officially declares the annual War on Christmas(tm) ON!
From my spy email:

"Take a stand for Merry Christmas, not Happy Holidays

Dear Friend,

Imagine how many people your church members come into contact with each day. Without speaking a word, your church can share the true meaning of Christmas with thousands of people in your community.

Even better, your church can give them away! Hand them to bank tellers, fast food workers, cashiers at the supermarket, toll-booth workers, letter carriers, store clerks...the list is endless!

Order your personal pack of 10 or 30 buttons today, or, sponsor your entire church by choosing a Large or Small Church Packet or the NEW Display Box of 250 buttons."

Well, who wants to help me hunt down Santa again? Gee, gets earlier and earlier every year.

... so they can afford to order this years crap.

I grew up in the commonwealth and we said happy christmas or happy holidays and many more variations ad infinitum. Does that make me an agent of Satan?

or I can buy 34 meal tickets to give out to street people for a meal at Sisters of the Road cafe. Hmm... decisions, decisions. I know, I'll try to figure out which one Jesus would do.

12. Is the "true meaning of christmas" that you only buy shit where clerks say
"merry christmas" instead of "happy holidays"?

I never realized the church's teachings hinged on clerks at retail establishments.

This is familiar. Start a bogus 'war' then sell buttons & ammo to the SuckerPuppets, pocket the change and have a Very Merry Time of It. Just like the oil-profits crusades. Ptoooey.

15. Oh, God in heaven, not this again from them! JESUS IS LORD. I will always say that, but frankly,
these people are an affront to decency. They don't believe in letting others have their own views about life and frankly, I think it's a safe view to hold that they don't follow much of what Jesus taught about loving other people as you love yourself.

The AFA is a horrible org.

17. THERE IS NO GOD.

Now, before I get freaked out on with a whole bunch of "stop with the anti-religious bigotry", I want to know how, exactly, that statement is any more offensive than "JESUS IS LORD."

21. I think it's a fair question.
Jesus is Lord.

Shiva is the destroyer/transformer god in the Trimurti.

Allah is the only God, creator of the universe, and the judge of humankind.

There is no God.

Why should any of the above statements be considered more offensive than any of the others?

That's the difference between the AFA(conservative) types and liberals.

As long as you grok that "THERE IS NO GOD" is no more an inherently offensive, bashing, or bigoted statement than "JESUS IS LORD", we're cool. :hi:

19. I remember when they used to at least wait until Thanksgiving to declare the war on Christmas.
These days of commercialism, they're putting their war on Christmas merchandise on the shelves at your local right-wing fundie loonie website earlier and earlier every year.

Maybe I'm just getting old. GET OFF MY LAWN!

37. No buttons, but there is the Freedom from Religion Foundation

The history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women's right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill, and for the right to choose contraception, sterilization and abortion have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. The Foundation works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church...

http://ffrf.org/about/

An interesting organization - one which takes on such right-wing lies as the ever more oft made claim that the United States was founded as a "Christian" nation. They point out that, in fact, ...

The United States was the first nation to establish the complete separation of church and state. The founders of our country knew that religion is divisive, and that more people have been oppressed, tortured and murdered in the name of a god than for any other reason. Thomas Jefferson wrote of the "remarkable proof of the universal spirit of religious intolerance, inherent in every sect, disclaimed by all while feeble, and practised by all when in power. Our laws have applied the only antidote to this vice, protecting our religious as they do our civil rights by putting all on equal footing" (1818 letter to Mordecai Noah)...

http://ffrf.org/publications/brochures/godlessness/

America was not founded as a Christian Nation because the founders had only to look at the havoc wrought by centuries of religious wars in Christian Europe.

They wanted to put that behind the new nation, thus becoming the first English Speaking nation to NOT have a state religion in the form of an Established Church.

24. Santa Claus is a pagan. He is NOT Christian, and has no place in Christian worship.
Neither do pagan trees, nor does the pagan custom of gift-giving.

To be honest, Christian Christmas celebrates a homeless married woman having someone else's child in a donkey stall.

32. AXIAL TILT IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON.
Still have my poster from last year with a lovely blazing sun on the left, a tilted Earth with 23 degrees marked, on the right,
and in between, AXIAL TILT IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

next to a poster of our favorite Christmas baby, Sir Isaac Newton. With the first page of Principia Mathematica (you would never know that I live with a physics nerd, wouldya?)

It baffled the natives. On the railroad right of way in downtown they put up JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON in lights.

Which is amazing since I've probably seen "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" on 150 times as many bumpers.
