Obama urges black community to "stop grumbling, stop crying....work to do."
While acknowledging the hard-hit black community and budding criticisms in its ranks, President Barack Obama said in a speech Saturday night to the Congressional Black Caucus that he wouldn't give up -- and urged members of the black community to join him to jump-start the still sluggish economy.

"I expect all of you to march with me, and press on," Obama said. "... Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We've got work to do."

The unemployment rate among African-Americans is 16.7%, nearly double the national average. That fact has made fiscal reforms a priority for caucus members, some of whom -- most of them Democrats --have criticized the president for not doing enough on the issue...

"The president shares the frustration of African-Americans and all Americans about the pace of the economy," said Kevin Lewis, the White House director of African-American media, before the caucus' Phoenix Awards Dinner. "Though the president is committed to improving the economy for all Americans, he'll note in tonight's speech that the American Jobs Act includes targeted initiatives and programs that protect, support and provide economic stability for the most vulnerable Americans. He'll continue to urge Americans to urge Congress to act in bipartisan fashion and pass the bill."

1. Thats easy to say Mr. President when "you" have both money and an income!
Now think of all the African Americans that have neither, and give me that line again, I dare you.

49. Not his best approach.
Give them a plan and be positive. I really don't think Obama has reached out enough to minorities in a man on the street kind of way. And I'm concerned that he's doing it because he's afraid of how the Repubs will view it.

The three Bush "free" trade agreements that Obama and the Republicans are trying to finalize should do wonders for the black unemployment rate.

117. To be fair, the black community has become very conservative on economic issues I think
Which is why, when the Jewish community became conservative on foreign policy after 9-11, it basically tore the traditional liberal coalition apart.

What ethnic groups are traditionally liberal today? Name one.

120. Any more sweeping generalizations to make?
I'm part of the Jewish community and I've only become more liberal over the past ten years -- on foreign as well as domestic policy.

No ethnic groups have ever been "traditionally" liberal. You can't look at someone's skin or religious background and assume you know everything about them. African Americans are not a monolithic group. Neither are Jews.

"I expect all of you to march with me, and press on," Obama said. "... Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We've got work to do."

...was awesome. The CBC cheered, applauded, laughed! Great speech. They gave him a standing ovation.

Oh, and that out of context comment was directed at the CBC, not the black community.

Oh, a couple of CBC relevant posts:

CBC Chairman Cleaver: McClatchy article used "dated quotes which were taken out of context"

"Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) praised President Obama's new jobs plan "

The future rewards those who press on. With patient and firm determination we will press on. I don’t know about you CBC, but the future rewards those who press on. With patient and firm determination, I’m going to press on for jobs. I’m going to press on for equality. I’m going to press on for the sake of our children. I’m going to press on for the sake of all those families who are struggling right now. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain. I’m going to press on. I expect all of you to march with me, and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes, shake it off, stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying, we are going to press on, we’ve got work to do.

Utterly dishonest mis-characterization in the OP.

he really couldn't have cared about any of us. The "Change you can believe in" just wasn't there. President Obama is a very likable guy, but I seriously think he sucks at doing many of the things that need to get done in this country, and part of that is because he doesn't have the killer instinct.

The however is, he knows that we on the left don't have much choice but to support him in the General. We will just hold our nose's and vote, cause their is no other choice. I hate it, but that's the way life is. Life would get one hell of allot tougher with a President Rick Perry (God forbid) or a President Romney.

45. February 2007 - campaigning begins...
Obama told the crowd he would tackle problems like poor schools, economic hardships and oil dependence, saying a "failure of leadership" is to blame for not meeting the nation's challenges. He also implored the crowd to demand that there be "universal health care in America by the end of the president's first term."

He called the Iraq war a "tragic mistake" and said, "It's time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else's civil war. That's why I have a plan that will bring our combat troops home by March of 2008.

fast forward to April 2011 - campaigning continues...

The video – entitled “It Begins With Us” – is an effort to rekindle the grassroots fervor that propelled Obama into office and seemed to be a tacit acknowledgement that many of his supporters have been disappointed by the stuttering pace of change and the compromises Obama has made in the last two-and-half years.

The two-minute clip features a series of interviews with voters from around the country explaining why they plan to support the president. It doesn’t include Obama’s voice or any new film footage of him. But it was quickly followed by an Obama email in which the president explained the early start to the campaign.

“We’re doing this now because the politics we believe in does not start with expensive TV ads or extravaganzas, but with you — with people organizing block-by-block, talking to neighbors, co-workers, and friends,” Obama writes, explaining why the launch is coming more than 19 months before Election Day.

“And that kind of campaign takes time to build.”

47. I would urge everyone to actually go watch the video:

Link here; http://theobamadiary.com/2011/09/24/heads-up-58/

The OP changed the title of the article in their subject line. No one is reporting it as "Obama urges black community to "stop grumbling, stop crying....work to do" except the dishonest OP.

show black folks what they clearly cannot see for themselves -- that the black president doesn't care about black people. Take quotes out of context, point to the black unemployment rate as if the problem began with this president, find fault with him at every turn, and eventually black folks will see the light because we don't have enough sense to see the game that's being played.

97. That's been the MO for a few for some time
They wet their pants with glee over every drop in black support ("OMG!!! It's down to only 87% now!one!") and crown everybody with melanin that dislikes this president the king of the castle, no matter how insignificant they may be or how astoundingly stupid their criticism.

The most asinine "sources" are listed as gospel (Black Agenda Report) and these same folks get mad as hell when black people have the nerve to tell them that their opinions may not be rooted in the best of intentions (the treatment of MHP's recent article in The Nation).

The double standards are glaring. If only these folks were half as interested in even an ounce of self-reflection as they are in pretending that they give a shit about black people in an effort to once again try to beat this president over the head, they'd be doing something that really mattered and would actually have some impact.

136. Teabaggers and conservatives are Democrats?
Really?

I thought teabaggers and neocons were Republicans and republican-friendly,

and the neo-liberals like Obama were Democrats...

all of whom are bad for the nation and the planet.

I also think it's an error of monumental proportions to make any election about personalities rather than issues, and to make this election about race rather than issues.

If we are going to be the change we want to see, we don't base our choices on the color of a leader, but on where he leads us. If we don't want people judged and sorted by the color of their skin, we don't do so.

We aren't there yet. I know that. But I'm going to be the change I want to see.

Political sophistication would be understanding that "progressive" can be accurately used for any political agenda; it doesn't have to be an agenda that moves social and economic justice forward. That "progressive" is somehow "liberal" or "left" or anything else that this country needs at this point is false. That the centrist/dlc/3rd way/"new" dem/neo-liberal think tank rightly calls itself the "Progressive Policy Institute."

It would be the ability to read and hear between the lines, beyond the rhetoric, beyond eloquent, emotional propaganda, to the reality of the policies being enacted and the power-brokers supported.

It doesn't take much sophistication, though, to know when you've been thrown under the bus. It's dirty, uncomfortable, and unhappy down here, and has gotten increasingly crowded as Obama's first term has played out.

116. End of Obama's Speech to CBC (full quote inside)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4k8PHiY35VE#t=542s">End of Obama's Speech to CBC
Throughout our history, change has often come slowly. Progress often takes time. We take a step forward, sometimes we take two steps back. Sometimes we get two steps forward and one step back. But it’s never a straight line. It’s never easy. And I never promised easy. Easy has never been promised to us. But we’ve had faith. We have had faith. We’ve had that good kind of crazy that says, you can’t stop marching. (Applause.)

Even when folks are hitting you over the head, you can’t stop marching. Even when they’re turning the hoses on you, you can’t stop. (Applause.) Even when somebody fires you for speaking out, you can’t stop. (Applause.) Even when it looks like there’s no way, you find a way — you can’t stop. (Applause.) Through the mud and the muck and the driving rain, we don’t stop. Because we know the rightness of our cause — widening the circle of opportunity, standing up for everybody’s opportunities, increasing each other’s prosperity. We know our cause is just. It’s a righteous cause.

So in the face of troopers and teargas, folks stood unafraid. Led somebody like John Lewis to wake up after getting beaten within an inch of his life on Sunday — he wakes up on Monday: We’re going to go march. (Applause.)

Dr. King once said: “Before we reach the majestic shores of the Promised Land, there is a frustrating and bewildering wilderness ahead. We must still face prodigious hilltops of opposition and gigantic mountains of resistance. But with patient and firm determination we will press on.” (Applause.)

So I don’t know about you, CBC, but the future rewards those who press on. (Applause.) With patient and firm determination, I am going to press on for jobs. (Applause.) I’m going to press on for equality. (Applause.) I’m going to press on for the sake of our children. (Applause.) I’m going to press on for the sake of all those families who are struggling right now. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain. I am going to press on. (Applause.)

I expect all of you to march with me and press on. (Applause.) Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. (Applause.) Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We’ve got work to do, CBC. (Applause.)

God bless you, and God bless the United States of America. (Applause.)

read the inflammatory headline but not the entire story, and just be pissed. It's more fun. So your efforts are worthless.

(I hope I don't have to put the sarcasm or rolling-eyes thingy here.)

You know damn good and well that you are trying to paint a dishonest picture surrounding the context of the speech. No one there was offended by it, every line got enormous amounts of applause and cheers. You are so desperate to push your anti-Obama agenda that you've stooped to an all new low in the level of dishonesty you'll employ to see it through.

My advice to other DUers. Remember this posters name and remember it well and don't buy into a damn thing they say from here on out. These kinds of posters are not to be taken seriously.

133. Amazing. Posting the President's OWN WORDS has become...
...distortion, propaganda, an attack on the President, pursuing an "agenda".

Yes, Alice,
we have fallen down the Rabbit Hole.

I wish our president would attack the Republicans with the same enthusiasm that he reserves for the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

Solidarity!
