ROGER EBERT: "I do not fear death"
Edited on Sun Sep-25-11 12:57 PM by kpete

"Kindness" covers all of my political beliefs."

THURSDAY, SEP 15, 2011 11:01 ET
BY ROGER EBERT
I do not fear death
I will pass away sooner than most people who read this, but that doesn't shake my sense of wonder and joy

............

I believe that if, at the end, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didn't always know this and am happy I lived long enough to find it out.

I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it. Mark Twain

2. "'Kindness' covers all of my political beliefs."
"That does a pretty good job of summing it up. 'Kindness' covers all of my political beliefs. No need to spell them out."

I love Roger Ebert. I am at his site every time I want to check out a movie. I was there today.

How sad it will be to lose this voice.

4. Socrates on Ebert's death when it comes.

"Be of good hope in the face of death. Believe in this one truth for certain, that no evil can befall a good man either in life or death, and that his fate is not a matter of indifference to the Gods." - Socrates

5. Brilliant
This ought to be taught in school. For all of the messed up people, maybe we could even turn it around. There are things in this modern society that aggravate the situation. But modern society also has tools that we didn't have before. I suppose there is hope.

6. K&R. Nice post.
I like Ebert a lot -

And marvel to this day that the same dude that helped write "Beyond the valley of the dolls" could grow up to be the sensitive, politically aware human he has turned into....

Or was that "Beyond the valley of the Supervixens".....lol.....

8. Ebert is a very special person, the kind that the world needs more of and to stay
longer. Special people like Ebert are always the kind there aren't enough of and ones we have always leave way to soon. :-(
