Pay-by-race bake sale at UC Berkeley still on, student Republican group says
CNN) -- It's meant to be racist, and it's meant to be discriminatory.

And the controversial "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" hosted by the Berkeley College Republicans is still on, the club's president said, despite "grossly misguided comments" and threats aimed at supporters of the University of California, Berkeley, student group.

During the sale, scheduled for Tuesday, baked goods will be sold to white men for $2, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1, black men for 75 cents and Native American men for 25 cents. All women will get 25 cents off those prices.

The bake sale is meant to draw attention to pending legislation that would allow California universities to consider race, gender, ethnicity and national origin during the admissions process.

Student defends 'race' bake sale

Bake sale prices based on race
"We agree that the event is inherently racist, but that is the point," BCR President Shawn Lewis wrote in response to upheaval over the bake sale. "It is no more racist than giving an individual an advantage in college admissions based solely on their race (or) gender."

1. They are doing this to get attention
And from the looks of it, people are falling right into their trap.

2. I'm a little conflicted about UC's policy.
Part of me wants to think that it should only be grades that count when it comes to admissions. Completely 100% merit based.

On the other hand, a student body filled with one group of people really does impact the overall learning environment at school. People from different backgrounds and experiences add value to discourse. Since a lot of the learning in college happens outside of the classroom in the interaction among students, having varying perspectives is really healthy.

5. I too wonder if admission policies should be merit-based
Didn't Martin Luther King, Jr. want to live in a country which judges people by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin?

6. Yes but you cannot compare the
education a kid got in the inner city to that of the burbs, for starters.

Once we reach that society, then sure,

7. So, should we disregard Martin Luther King Jr.'s advice until a later time?

Judge people by the color of their skin for the time being?

8. Until we get close to that
if you can go listen to Hartman on that TODAY, to be exact.

We still live in a pretty racist society.

It was a dream, I think we will reach it, perhaps in my lifetime... but we are not there yet... and with things like Leave no Child behind we are actually losing ground and fast.

9. Well, I tend to view any modern-day judgement by skin color as a "two wrongs make a right" argument
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 02:05 AM by The Northerner
If it was wrong back then why should it be tolerated if the policy is reversed today?

And if one supports said policy then should all people of one race be treated differently regardless of whether they were involved in past discriminatory behavior? Should people also be treated differently because of the wrongdoings of their parents or because of the wrongdoings of people with whom they just happen to share the same skin color?

I'm quite torn on this.

10. Yes but white privilege is very real
And we have kids who really do not have the same opportunities and if we got rid of a lot of these policies will become an underclass this fast.

I am going from rough numbers and memory

AVERAGE wealth held by a white family, including houses, bank accounts et al, are 113K... the same for blacks is about 5K.

Average white family helping kids get their first house, it 40%, for AA it is about 5%.

The numbers are still astounding.

Ideally, I agree with you, but we are not there yet, and the last three years, have reversed trends in serious ways as well.

I recommend you watch the segment... when Hartman posts it, it was on RT tonight.

3. Are you kidding me?
A repug bake sale gets cnn coverage but not a protest of wall street?

I hope Michael Moore tears cnn and all others a new one tonight!

4. You tell 'em, Shawn Lewis!
I tell you the White Man just can't catch a break in this crazy world. Nobody knows how tough straight White Men have it, because they can't get in on the national conversation. I heard that just last week from Rush and George and Pat and Michael and Joe and Mike and seven or eight others whose names I forget right now.

I would go take all the baked goods and set up a competing table and be that "Thass capitalism, SUCKAS!"

16. Repukes very poor at math
25 cents for Native Americans.

25 cents off for women.

I assume there's a Native American student association at Berkeley, and probably one in the city as well. So all the women could just line up and clean the bigots out for free! :P

How do people who can't do math get into Berkeley in the first place?!
