Macy's to hire 78,000 temporary workers for the holiday season

The retailer Macy's announced Monday that it plans to hire 78,000 temporary workers for the holiday season.

Macy's said this is an increase of 4% from last year, when the retailer hired 75,000 seasonal jobs.

"We expect additional hiring this year given the continued sales growth in our business, both in-store and online," said Macy's Chief Executive Terry Lundgren.

The company said it needs to staff Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, call centers, distribution centers and warehouses that store products for online shipping.

Most of the seasonal positions are part-time, with evening, weekend and overnight shifts required. The company said these temporary positions can lead to year-round jobs

3. There was a front-page NYT article on the boomlet in spending on consumer feel-good items.

Retail spending may very well hit a high this holiday season for the first time in years. Apparently, lots of categories of self-indulgent spending (baked goods, manicures, pedicures, hair care, meat pies, purses, shoes, etc.) are going up because lots of consumers are tired of their self-imposed austerity budgets.

4. Let's hope they don't find themselves on the wrong side of the "War On Christmas"

because they way I see it, this is some positive news for job-seekers. My guess is, Bill-O et al will call for a boycott if there's any of those evil "Happy Holiday" signs in Macy's stores. They don't bother me, but I'm sure they're an offense to all the good christians for whom the only reason to celebrate Jesus' birth is so everyone can go shopping!
