School aide accused of taping child's mouth shut

A Whitehead Road Elementary School paraprofessional is no longer on the job after taping a student’s mouth shut in the school.

The aide is on administrative leave pending the outcome of a Clarke County School District investigation into the incident, said Anisa Sullivan Jimenez, a spokeswoman for the school district.

The aide was sent home after the school’s principal learned of the incident on Thursday.

The principal also notified the child’s parents of what had happened, Jimenez said.

It was somewhat common back in the 1950s. Nobody thought anything about it.

5. One of my worst memories is the time a teacher taped a kid's mouth shut.

Another worst was a different teacher who turned a little boy over her knee and gave him a "sound spanking" in front of the class. Perhaps those actions helped keep the rest of us in line--it certainly did me!--but I've often wondered how those abused kids made it through life. This was long ago, back in the 40s, but it's profoundly disturbing to know such things happen now. Not sure how the parents handled this, but I don't think I'd hold back on my response if it were me.
