As a way to solve the national debt crisis, North Carolina Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue recommends suspending congressional elections for the next couple of years.

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” Perdue said at a rotary club event in Cary, N.C., according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”

Perdue said she thinks that temporarily halting elections would allow members of Congress to focus on the economy. “You have to have more ability from Congress, I think, to work together and to get over the partisan bickering and focus on fixing things,” Perdue said.

I know it is a joke but it gives the Repubs a talking point. Even if it is something they would do.

Now THAT would be a more accurate headline.

It reads like a normal politician. Hardly ever was one of them born who didn't think that they would be much more effective if they didn't have to face those pesky voters.

3. "it was just a joke"
Is code for: Walk that the fuck back as fast as you can.

And you're right. It would be so much easier to govern if you didn't need the consent of the people. Fortunately, our system doesn't work like that.

4. Trust me, it was a joke. The Republican dominated State House and Senate
are going at her hammer and tongs.

She would love to get rid of them.

8. Yes, she was talking about CONGRESS (not that I see how that's relevant),
It's ok to cancel elections as long as it's not your own reelection that gets canceled?

I just listened to the audio. There's no way that was in jest.

There is spin going on here, but it's all from her team trying to walk back an awful gaffe.

7. She wasn't kidding.
Listen to the tape. She was serious. So that makes her an "Idiot". And when her spokesman said she was kidding, he was lying. So that makes him a "Liar". If you don't call politicians on their bullshit, people, then the bullshit will continue. Don't be afraid to tell the truth about idiots and liars, even if they happen to be Democrats.

9. This.
Jimbo3 hits the nail on the head.

If a Republican had made a comment like this under ANY circumstances DU would be going nuts.

12. Context is everything. Bemoaning the fact that congress makes political hay instead of jobcreating
and doing so by wishing an impossible feat like canceling elections till they do, compared to what?

Bush actually WIELDED his executive power to curb the power of congress. You want to compare Perdue's awkward joke to that?
