Nobody had to "re-align" runways, they just had to paint new numbers on them to reflect the movement of magnetic north, which isn't anything new. There's ZERO evidence that your "dead birds" nonsense has anything at all to do with the drifting of magnetic north, and the planet is hardly flooding.

I hereby request that all DU members need to take and pass a basic junior-high-level earth sciences course prior to posting to DU. Do I hear a second?

Count to 10, and calm down. The earth's tectonic plates are always moving. The magnetic poles have shifted many, many times in the past. The planet and most of the life on it managed to survive. With some forethought and planning H. sapiens may even survive global climate change.

Rachel spent quite a bit of time on this yesterday and thank goodness she explained what I already know. The pole shifts... regularly.

This shift has been a little larger than usual... but it does shift, regularly. Some charts and topo maps will need reprinting (The ones that have the lines on them), but this happens all the time. You see the core is solid, but between the core and the crust we have metal, and an electric field. That means a magnetic field... been that way for a long time. One reason we have an atmosphere. Rocks WITHOUT a liquid core and a field, (as well as a mass sufficient for gravity) will lose atmosphere fairly fast.

As to the birds. yes there is something going on, but I am sure we can use science too. I suspect some flocks are confused since they used magnetic navigation, Also we have die outs regularly.

If I were into the eschatology I have been 'xplaining this week though, I'd be crapping my pants too... or grateful that the end was coming... relax, it will come... in about 4.5 billion years when the sun finally grows to three times it's current size.
