A face put on Wisconsin's voter suppression law:
New Law Means This Man Can't Vote:

http://lacrossetribune.com/news/opinion/mailbag/article_fd215e5a-e952-11e0-8dc1-001cc4c03286.html

My husband, Chuck Dahl, was born in Viroqua, educated in Viroqua’s public school system, earned a college degree and joined the U.S. Navy, where he served honorably for 35 years. He also operated businesses in Viroqua, paid his property and income taxes, served on the City Council and was mayor of Viroqua for more than a decade.

Chuck has been a citizen of the United States all of his life and entitled to all the rights and privileges of citizenship. He has never committed a felony or any other crime that would deny him his precious citizenship’s right to vote.

Come 2012, however, my husband will not be able to vote.

Chuck has been bed-bound since 2007. He cannot walk, and he cannot drive to Onalaska to get a new state-issued ID. In order for him to go to Onalaska (we have no DMV in Vernon County), we would have to hire medical transport from our home to Onalaska and back; this transportation expense ranges from $80 to more than $200.

This country already has up to 40% of the people who are eligible to vote who can never be bothered to exercise that right. How many of those who do vote would vote if the process cost them $80 to $100 to get a voter ID?

6. Check out this thread about how Walker could change recall rules to help him:

MADISON — Republican leaders are considering a move that could make it easier for Gov. Scott Walker to fight off a potential recall election in January.

The Legislature's rules committee ended its meeting Tuesday without voting on two new Government Accountability Board (GAB) policies dealing with changes in technology and vagaries in the state's new photo voter ID law. But the committee's co-chairwoman said she heard enough testimony to warrant further investigation and possible action in the near future.

Sen. Leah Vukmir, R-Wauwatosa, said nothing she heard during the three-hour meeting allayed her fears about the new policies by the state's election watchdog agency. Republican leaders say the rules endanger "clean, fair elections across the board in Wisconsin."

But Democrats on Tuesday accused Republicans of running interference for the governor and trying to suppress voter participation.

2. The GOP knows the only way they can steal elections is to keep people from voting
Voter ID is just one of their tools to discourage or prevent people from exercising the civic duty.

11. The White Peoples' Party know that the handwriting is on the wall for their party.
In 30 years the collective minorities in this country will comprise a majority. If the Republicans want to retain power in the nation or states they will have to morph the U.S. into becoming an apartheid South Africa.

3. How about if Social Security, WIC, Medicaid and Medicare cards were to become valid picture IDs?

Also, college and high school IDs (if you are over 18)?

7. I hope many more incidents like this are compiled so a good challenge to the law can be made.
The requirements should be considered a poll tax. Even without the extremes it is still a poll tax as it requires getting a certified birth certificate which costs money to receive.

I'm from out-of-state and it cost me $75 to get mine. It costs $20 just for the search even if the date and location is known. It costs $3 for each additional copy.

If the request is faxed it costs $20 for expedited service. It is expedited period when the request if faxed.

12. I am beginning to think democrats should get on board with National ID legislation
If every single US citizen was issued a Federal ID at no charge to themselves it would go a long way to solving many problems...I have a difficult time understanding our arguments against such a thing..

13. Sue them for violating the Americans With Disabilities Act.
I know the GOP throws up all these obstacles to voting and that they have their effect even if they're later overturned.

But still, publicizing the illegality of these kinds of tactics is very important.

16. Seems the best strategy
That kind of lawsuit scares the state because it can be very expensive.
