Albany County, New York proposes Animal Abuse Registry
Albany County, New York proposes Animal Abuse Registry

It is a known fact that current penalties for animal cruelty are minimal to none in just about every state and county.

But Albany Co., New York is looking to change that by proposing a county-wide registry of convicted animal abusers. At Tuesday's public meeting, this proposed law received almost unanimous support.

Local Law No. K (also known as "Animal Abuse Registry Law"), if passed would require anyone convicted of animal cruelty in Albany County, to register their name, current address and photograph, and pay an annual fee to the Sheriff's Department.

First time abusers will remain on the registry for 10 years, while after a second conviction they will remain on the registry for life.

Anyone who sells or adopts a pet to anyone in the database would be fined.

1. Good! I'm on several rescue lists on FB...
what I hear about daily is mortifying and depressing, because I know most of the abusers will get off with little more than a slap. And then they can get another animal and do it again.

3. Sex offender registries, now animal abuse registries, and down the slippery slope we go.
What's next, thief registries, dope smoker registries, what?

Sorry, but we don't need to be applying the scarlet letter to any criminal who has done their time.

5. not even human
No one who would abuse an animal has any right to call himself human. This is the least that can be done.
