200K-member Tranport Union Votes to Support #OccupyWallStreet
Are we at the beginning of a popular movement of great beauty and power?

Sure is looking that way!

2. it seems as if the working class is starting to realize it's on its own...
and it is going to have to start taking matters into its own hands if it wants to get some attention.

We shall see.

4. Can police brutality stop this movement?
That's really the big question for me. I have no doubt that a sizable number of workers and unemployed people in the U.S are now prepared to take direct action if they believe it might produce change.

The main responses the oligarchs have to this are 1) to unleash the police state apparatus they've spent so much money and time building up, while 2) using the mass media they own and control to mount a hate campaign against the protesters.

Hello White House? Which side you on here?

6. Not if there's a couple hundred thousand
(or more) out there. At that time it becomes too big for even a large metro PD to stifle, ESPECIALLY if there's no fear of arrest or, more accurately, if the cause is big enough that arrest or brutality is not a deterrent.

It depends on the size and determination of the masses.

7. Probably so, hope so
I remain mindful, though, that the U.S oligarchs have amassed the biggest internal security apparatus in human history, more prison space per capita than any other country, and have (almost) absolute control over public information systems.

8. So different from the 1960's
One of the great weaknesses of protest in the 60's was the alienation of the antiwar movement from the unions and hardhats.

There were good historical reasons for that alienation. The unions felt they had achieved the American dream for their members, saw the Vietnam War as protecting their way of life, and resented any attack on it.

It has taken the great disillusionment of the present moment to wake the unions up to what the dirty hippies knew all along.

I'm sorry it took so long. But we all work out of our own life experiences, and I'm just glad to see workers and hippies on the same side.
