Number two...it can sometimes take two or more fully grown men to restrain a particularly violent, freaked out, or otherwise difficult person, male or female, large or small.

It's not just about protecting themselves. It's also about not wanting the person him/herself to be injured. The more hands/arms available for restraint, the less energy has to go behind any of them, and the less likelihood the person will be injured by his OWN actions.
