September 27, 2011 - TAMPA, FL - In a bizarre twist of fate, a growing movement of New York City Police Department officers are banding together with the Occupy Wall Street movement, while the main stream media continues to relatively ignore this escalating event.

The Occupy Wall Street movement issued the following statement on their website:
"Today we received unconfirmed reports that over one hundred blue collar police refused to come into work in solidarity with our movement. These numbers will grow. We are the 99 percent. You will not silence us."

The news was released shortly after the identity of Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna was revealed after he allegedly pepper sprayed a deaf woman.

with 34,500 officers in totality, unless one or more of these officers steps up to confirm it, how would anyone ever know that they weren't just out sick. 1 in 345 officers refusing to show up is probably lower then their usual out sick rate.

And the spokesmen aren't going to confirm a think like that. the police higher ups are not on the side of this protest. City hall would like it to go away. I would imagine even most of the liberal oriented organizations and politicians who might have affinity with the cause are hesitant to be connected to something with so much potential for "going wrong", something so self directed and not under the power of a recognized authority.

Many of the 10 demands are laudable. I believe that a Tobin Tax would put an end to speculation and the elimination of Glass-Steagall was one of the main drivers that put the US ecomony in the mess that it was in. Others are going to take a lot longer to address, if they ever will be addressed.

However, I cannot comport doubling down on shutting down the economy as a whole. The markets are tenuous, at best. A shutdown is the last thing we need right now.

Strikes are suppose to have an impact and the greater the impact the more effective the strike. Thus making it possible to come to a resolution quicker and easier.

I was wondering from day 1 why the cops were not on the other side of the line. Unions /working class/ underemployed/ unemployed / Wall Street office temps have much more in common with the protestors.

I did temp work on Wall Street (for 7 years) when I couldn't find a job after college. Most of those Wall Street buildings are packed with low wage temps who have no job security or benefits. And quite often its temps who do all the day to day operations who run things. Rarely did CEO's or high salary titles show up, maybe one or two days a year.

And he did this while serving simultaneously as President of Motorola where his biggest accomplishment was landing the bank as a customer.

More direct to what you said, when Merril Lynch laid off a bunch of their low-paid staff, they sent them home in limos. The laid off staffers saw this as just rubbing salt into the wounds which Lynch did not understand at all. Of course, if the CEO of Lynch gets laid off he ends up with a golden parachute and a new job making even more money somewhere else. Maybe they believe that is the way life works for everyone. We have a columnist here in Chicago who -- noting how often he writes about the exact same person bankrupting business after business while getting multi-million salaries -- has a standing offer to bankrupt any business within a year for just $1 million. But they keep opting for the higher paid "experts" instead.


Disclaimer: he might have been President of the bank and CEO of Motorola. I don't recall which way it was. But the point of the story, that the game is rigged, doesn't depend on that technicality.
