....faced with a choice, the American people side with the president that the role of government may be limited, but it should side with the poor and the middle class over the rich, and protect investments in our future. Barack Obama just nullified the Republican potent weapon of 'class warfare,' and all they can do is sit and watch, probably stunned.

And this is Barack Obama's success. He has not only gotten the American people to think about those choices and make the correct ones, but he has methodically exposed the Republican party as the enemy of the middle class and working people. He has exposed the Republicans for their real agenda: dismantling social responsibility, strengthening corporate welfare, and let the rest of us go to hell. If progressives want to learn how to win long term battles rather than short term bitching contests, look at Barack Obama.

37. A few nights ago, Olberman did a real good job on

how Christie has pretty much damaged his own chances of running for president because he's on video saying "I'm not ready". There is no way for him to realistically do an end run around that or try to keep the rug pulled over it. Christie doesn't know when to shut his yap before hit foot flies into it and now he has laid the groundwork for his own trouncing.

39. Why is it awful to say, really? You can feel sorry for him for having an addiction, certainly,

but would we vote for him if he was an habitual drunk? A coke addict stealing quarters from his kids' piggy banks to get a fix? Those are addictions, too.

How about if he had some other health issue--and obesity at the level he's at IS a serious health issue. He's not a chubby Clinton, munching that burger and halfheartedly jogging, he's TAFTian!!

If we knew he had major heart disease, or prostate cancer (things that can be cured but are serious), or if he were bipolar (another illness that can be managed with medication) would we be leaping through our own buttholes to be political correct?

I think we need to be honest, and look at that guy and say he is a heart attack waiting to happen, rather than play the "fat acceptance" game. We don't need a President on the brink of death due to his unhealthy habits--the job is stressful enough as it is.

I have a few pounds I could stand to lose, myself. I'm no Christie, thank heavens, but I could do a few pushaways from the table and they'd do me good. Many of us are carrying around a bit of winter insulation all year round. There's certainly empathy on some level for his condition, but you don't make someone President because you feel sorry for him, certainly (I'm disregarding the fact that he is a mean asshole, to boot!).

I think someone who's addicted to the occasional Big Mac and fries, or those cigarettes that will kill you slowly, well, that's one thing, but when someone is, quite literally, two and a half men in terms of his weight, it's suggestive of being totally out of control--instead of having just a bit of a vice. And if he's that "out of control" in that area of his life, where else might he be out of control? This is the guy who would have his finger on the button--I think we'd prefer someone with a bit more self control!

So don't feel bad. It's not an awful thing to say. He is what he is, and we can't be playing that "Emperor's New Clothes" game (especially with him--gaaaah!) and try to pretend the guy doesn't have his own orbit.

A Democratic president advocating for Democratic principles would garner public support in a way that a Democratic president trying to advance Republican principles never would. It's a puzzler, that's for sure. Totally counterintuitive to think that policies endorsed by a majority of voters would result in higher favorability ratings!

I would add that, while Obama may have meant to send this message all along, he most certainly did not. Now that he has finally said it (or did he, I'm not sure), he needs to stick with it.

He has to win on this. His supporters are still hoping he can do what is right. So far this is only rhetoric -- no action.

Geithner, Bernanke and the right-wingers including Daley have to go. If we are to trust Obama, he has to change his economic team. We have to have much more reform on Wall Street. Much more. If Obama can't fire the conservatives he has around him, then his "jobs" and "debt" plans are just so much empty talk.

By their works, ye shall know them. We shall know Obama when he acts on his talk. He hasn't done that.

Obama doesn't need much from Congress to simply fire Geithner and Bernanke. And if Congress does not want to approve Obama's replacements, then Obama can just operate with temporary appointees of his choosing until Congress agrees to his picks.

the above graph contains some distortions. Those distortions
undermine credibility. the gap between Democrat and Republican
leaders in congress was 2% in Dec 10 and 4% in May 11. In Sept
11 the gap is 8%. The position of the lines understates public
confidence in the Republicans in May 11. It overstates public
support for the Republican leaders in Sept 11. The distance
should be twice what it is in May11.
