Rick Perry fires ‘relaxing’ sniper rifle in official campaign video

In an official campaign video released Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry explained that shooting sniper rifles was his version of golf.

“This is my golf,” the candidate said, praising the owners of a gun shop that “make the finest sniper rifles in the world.”

“I’m still trying to get a hole in one,” Perry’s voice is heard saying over video of him firing one of the rifles.

“For me it’s really relaxing and getting to come hang out with what I consider to be patriots, the men and women that work here.”

Gabrielle Giffords owns a Glock handgun, and as a two-term Democratic congresswoman representing a swing district in Arizona’s rugged southeast, she may have needed to stress that. Still, the NRA only gives her a tepid D+ rating. In a tough election cycle that has seen Democrats bracing for a backlash from rural voters, every photo op counts, including this earlier one, featured on Giffords’s Flickr page. Giffords managed to pull off a victory against a tough candidate, but as the GOP began its tenure as House majority party, she was shot in Tucson by an allegedly disturbed young man who apparently had no trouble getting weapons in the state, and who killed six people in the same incident. Giffords remains in critical condition.

12. Perry is an absolute asshole...but I don't see anything wrong with target practice as recreation.

I don't do it now but I have in the past. To say it's incredibly difficult to put a bullet through a tiny hole in a paper target with gravity, wind and other forces affecting it would be an understatement. It's fun. I don't do it anymore because I think it's a filthy habit because of the lead involved and it's really difficult for me to hold a gun and not think of all the problems people cause with them. And of course, "problem" is a motherfucking understatement.

But nomatter what, Perry's an asshole anyway. For some reason he reminds me the most of George W Bush and I can't even imagine what kind of fuck he would be, in office. But that particular passtime? Meh, he's probably doing it out of that small-penis syndrome which seems to drive Republicans to want to surround themselves with guns, weaponry, tokens of authority in short.

But without the political flavoring I don't see much wrong with the passtime itself. They switched to lasers for the biathlon and at some point in the future I might switch to a rifle like that. It really is fun and incredibly difficult.

17. I find it hard to believe he's not faking it

Perry, like Shrub, is a faker. Just about everything you see or hear about him these days is little more than a facade he maintains for the cameras. It's like the coyote he supposedly shot when he was running for governor last time.

18. Target shooting is a fascinating hobby ...

and far more difficult than most people believe. Most of my target shooting has been done with handguns and it took me years to become just fairly proficient. However I always enjoyed the trips to the range and I do indeed find shooting to be fun.

There are some similarities with golf and target shooting and in fact many shooters also play golf. In my opinion golf is the more frustrating of the two sports.

While it true that firearms have caused many tragedies in our nation, the overwhelming majority of gun owners use their weapons in a safe and responsible manner. An estimated 80,000,000 individuals own over 300,000,000 firearms. Unfortunately when you have that large a figure, a few will be irresponsible and not practice gun safety or suffer from anger management problems or severe mental issues. Of course, criminals often own firearms and misuse them as tools of their chosen occupation. Drug gangs fighting over turf over cause some of the worst tragedies.

Some believe that the answer to gun violence is draconian restrictions on gun ownership and the type of firearms civilians can own. Others disagree and want very few restrictions. The best solutions are probably somewhere in the middle of the two views coupled with effective enforcement of existing law.

Lead is a problem that every shooter should be aware of. I used to shoot at an indoor range and reloaded my own ammo. After talking to other shooters, I decided to get a lead test. I was right on the border line above which I would have been considered to have a elevated and dangerous level of lead in my blood. I continued shooting at the indoor range but was very careful to wash my hands and face and blow my nose when I left the firing line and to shower and change my clothes when I got home. I also was far more careful when I was reloading ammo and handling fired cases. My lead level dropped considerably in a year but was still slightly elevated.

While you are bothered with thoughts of the evil firearms can do when you handle one, I don't suffer from that problem. It may well be that our personal life experiences differ. In my case, both my mother and my daughter used a handgun to stop an attacker. Fortunately in both cases they did not have to shoot either of the individuals. When the two thugs realized that the woman that they planned to attack was armed, they turned and ran. Firearms can be used for both good and evil.

I can see some advantages to a laser rifle for target shooting but I suspect it would take much of the challenge out of the sport as you would no longer have to worry about bullet drop or windage.

First off, it's either "one inch" or "one MOA (minute-of-angle)." Not "One inch MOA."

Two, it's "five point five six" or just more commonly "five five six." NOT "point five five six."

Either one of those is kind of like saying you're "taking an airliner plane." It makes you sound like a simpleton who doesn't know what they're talking about.

Lastly, what LaRue makes are not really "sniper rifles." They're just rifles. Even their most powerful model, a 7.62 with a 20 inch barrel, is stretching the definition rather heavily. At most it would qualify as a designated marksman's rifle.
