Cat hero retires from dog duty
Cat hero retires from dog duty

Harley deserves a round of applause from all of us dog owners.

The apparently fearless feline has been a longtime resident at the Animal Humane Association of New Mexico. His job for three years was to face down dogs.
Three years ago Harley was “enlisted” to help check new canine arrivals to the shelter. Could they tolerate a cat?

The process involved several steps, according to Sam Blankenship with the humane association.

A dog would first be walked by Harley in a caged cat condo. Employees would watch to see how attentive the dog was to the cat. If the dog passed that test, they allowed the animals to come face to face.

snip...
Harley, now 12, faced off with more than 700 dogs, from pit bulls to Chihuahuas. Now, he needs a home and Animal Humane is looking for his replacement.

2. I just took a quick look over there
and it looks like he's already got a forever home.

Besides, my little old lady cat would never forgive me.

3. that poor cat
as someone who has taken in stray dogs and then had them adopted out through a service I can tell you I have witnessed this test

It can't be any fun for the cat. The dogs I have taken in have passed the test but I must assume many don't. That means the poor cat has dogs trying to attack it on a regular basis.

In my very limited experience it would seem that different cats were used for this test. That seems like it would be more humane than forcing that poor thing to endure attempted attacks on a regular basis.

rant over

OK, I will applaud that poor thing and wish him the best. He has earned it.

4. My town's Petco hosted a puppy traing class last night. Instead of selling bred cats, they take in
strays and put them in display cages for adoption. The dog training area is adjacent to the cat cages, and all five dogs totally ignored the cats.

5. Just looking at his picture...
...I thought "That's an old kitty; look at his coat."

They tend to get that spiky, clumpy look to their fur sometimes.

Took my 12 year-old lady to the vet today because her coat was starting to look like that.

The Sainted Vet gave her a worming pill (she's been helping the boys eat their kills) and said it would probably help.

Otherwise, for a 12 year-old kitty, she's doing great!

Harley IS a beautiful kitty with that silvery-blue fur and those amazing green eyes...:loveya:
