The air in those places was so thick you could cut with a knife.

The one SERIOUS exception was the Grateful Dead concert. There was a cloud about 10' deep over the entire lawn. God knows how many substances contributed to it.

Look up Tennessee's 1879 'Army and Navy' law, which prohibited the sale of "belt or pocket pistols, or revolvers, or any other kind of pistols, except army or navy pistols" -- which were prohibitively expensive. Can't have those freedmen arming themselves, now can we?
