The guy is basically a mess, and just like the Ramones' song "Pinhead" (and the movie that inspired it, Todd Browning's "Freaks"), he's found a tribe of like-minded misfits and made a living off of it, except in 2011 he's decided he wants more and has decided that whimpering and moaning and threatening to close up shop is the best way to get it.

They often made fools of the "city slickers," particularly Jed. He was a sharp dude in the show and, for all Granny's fits, she was still as wise as Elle Mae was pretty. Only Jethro was portrayed as overly dumb, which is funny, since the person who portrayed him, Max Baer, Jr., directed many of the later shows.

FWIW, most Hillbillies fought with the North during the Civil War. As poor, betrodden, but religious people, they both empathized with the slaves and felt, religiously, that slavery was wrong.

I'm really tired of hearing the "hillbilly" remarks on DU, considering that mountain people have always struggled for their betterment and were, for the most part, against prejudices.

They may have been unschooled, but they weren't dumb.
