My son.......... or as I call him , " Jooooooooonyah" , age 14, gets on the bus around 10:30 am to go to Staples to buy me a BDAY present. ( Happy Birthday to me. Note to self: I really have to consider giving that boy an allowance raise.). On the ride back ( He bought me headphones, BTW) a mentally disturbed male adult boards the bus and starts shouting about "Japs" and "Chinks" how he'd like to kill them and that they better get their motherbleepin' asses back to motherbleepin Hong Kong..
A difficult situation. Joooonyah was born in Cambodia ( which technically makes him a "motherbleepin' gook", I guess). No, my son says later, the guy is not making eye contact with him, specifically. But I think its unlikely that there were any other Asians on board... given the local demographics.
Anyhow, bus driver ( bless him) tells ranter ( Yo... keep in it in your head or I'm gonna have to put you off.) Ranter quiets for a minute or two, then starts back up. Bus driver pulls over, makes good on his promise and tells ranter to get off. Ranter obliges.
Where do we find such men? Seriously, very outside the urban ethos, which is basically: don't get involved, don't make, eye contact, don't put yourself out, well.... you get the picture.
No great moral here. Son was pretty shaken up about it. I told him that people get harassed and abused for all sorts of reasons: gay, Jewish, black, white etc. Asians are no different.
Both ranter and hero were AA. A little ironic: it's MLK Day.... but otherwise extraneous to the story.
Anyway.... just thought I'd share. So how do people celebrate MLK Day in YOUR town or city?
