4. When I was a child, such beatings with a belt or other kind

kind of strap like maybe a rubber hose were considered okay. My best friend in grade school and her sister were often "spanked" with daddy's belt. (This was in the forties.) Most parents didn't beat their children (mine didn't) but never stepped in when another parent was "disciplining" their children physically. It was considered not minding your own business. I'm happy that people have evolved since then to recognize this as child abuse.
