"Monster" greenhouse gas levels seen

(AP) WASHINGTON - The global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide jumped by the biggest amount on record, the U.S. Department of Energy calculated, a sign of how feeble the world's efforts are at slowing man-made global warming.

The new figures for 2010 mean that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four years ago.

"The more we talk about the need to control emissions, the more they are growing," said John Reilly, co-director of MIT's Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change...

...The world pumped about 564 million more tons of carbon into the air in 2010 than it did in 2009. That's an increase of 6 percent. That amount of extra pollution eclipses the individual emissions of all but three countries - China, the United States and India, the world's top producers of greenhouse gases.

It is a "monster" increase that is unheard of, said Gregg Marland, a professor of geology at Appalachian State University, who has helped calculate Department of Energy figures in the past...

We could have re-elected Carter, continued with his plan to curb energy use... set a different example and lead by that... but oh well. Greedy and stupid always did outnumber generous and thoughtful.

5. If only people weren't so treasonous.
Carter didn't lose as much as was betrayed.

6. Yes...
but people were stupid enough to fall for such theatrics. And to fall for a B-movie actor as governor and then president. And the same state later elected Arnold. *sigh*

16. They trusted the corporate media's version of the political/policy landscape and bought
comfortable superficiality over stark reality.

12. I has become crystal clear that only one thing will ever bring down CO2 emissions
And that one thing is a permanent global economic crash. Without that, we are looking at a catastrophic situation for life on the planet, well within 100 years.

Fortunately, we may be about to give Mother Nature some breathing room by precipitating just such a crash.

13. I wonder if the recent slow down has slowed emissions much
Here's hoping for a crash... I agree - the only way

15. CO2 emissions went down 1.8% in 2009 then back up 6% in 2010.
2009 was the first time global emissions had dropped YOY since the 1980-1982 oil fiasco and recession.

20. Yes I went and checked that, so we do need a slow down
we might just get one big enough to save the planet

19. It's not capitalism I hate.
Edited on Fri Nov-04-11 02:20 PM by GliderGuider
It's our alienated, industrialized global culture that defines all "progress" in terms of money. For that purpose it doesn't much matter whether the underlying economic system is capitalist, communist, socialist, monarchic or a fascist dictatorship (in this regard I'm an equal-opportunity hater). Every economic system on the planet exhibits this tendency - after all, they all cooperated to make CO2 emissions go up 6% last year...
