Had my groceries disappear out of my car on the way home.
My two favorite no longer available Target bags, one canvas one burlap, bread, Swiss cheese, three Stonyfield 32 oz yogurts, bag of Almond Joy minis for my lunches this week, Olivio, foot long turkey and swiss sandwich from the deli for dinner tonight, corn muffins, pumpkin donuts, bananas, eggs, pancake syrup and a 12 pack of Lipton citrus tea. $44 worth of groceries in total. And the bags had the bread and eggs visible under the light where I was parked.

I work in a town where you don't really have to worry about stuff disappearing. I usually don't lock my doors where I get my lottery ticket, so I didn't tonight. There was a young guy in at the same time I was buying a candy bar, but with with change. Unkempt, and not clean looking. thin dirty jacket and skull rag on his head. He came in the back door almost simultaneously, went out the front into the area where I was parked after the cashier counted his change (OUT LOUD which was embarrassing as hell). He did not look like he was doing OK.

Got my ticket, yakked with the cashier a few, looked at the new Car and Driver, went out to the car, opened the door, and noticed the bags were gone off my passenger front seat. I thought for a couple of minutes, and let it go. Anyone who is hungry enough to steal groceries needs them way way more than I do.

I hope he enjoys the pumpkin donuts.......he needs them way way more than I do. And I hope he shares his good fortune with his friends or family. Even in one of the richest counties in America, we have a lot of people in need, but they get ignored.

Have a nice evening.

Well, if you are in the virtual neighborhood... you are invited over for kid-squished meatballs, broccoli rice au gratin and fresh steamed broccoli. :)

eta: Which is another way of saying, good karma will come back to you.

48. You're right about there being a need.
He probably is not part of a food bank or daily free meal. Or is there no such thing in your community? The bags were just too tempting.

But good for you with warm soup on a chilly night. I had Progresso Chickarina, although beef barley is one of my favorites since I was a kid. Enjoy.

6. Stealing somebody else's groceries is not OK
You should ask if the store had a camera watching the parking lot. It could be easy to nab him that way.

Had he stolen the groceries directly from the store, well that would not be OK either, but it is less of an outrage that stealing them from another customer who uses his/her hard earned money to buy food.

Yes, it was theft, but worthy of punishment? I'd say staving isn't a punishable crime. And don't say the hunger wasn't the crime, that it was the theft. I swear you sound just like a red in a blue state.

What would you have the guy do? Beg? He likely tried that.

I'm glad you are better off, unfortunately I doubt the person who stole your food cares what your situation and anyone else's is. If someone broke into my car and stole the 50 some dollars of groceries with the money I managed to muster up this week, I'd be fucked. But because I have a car, I guess it would be safe to assume I'm "well off".

I'm high on the hog when I can devote atmost $100 in a month to groceries, and well off I am not, just a decent one bedroom apt by some train tracks, a 2007 kia spectra I have a car note on, car insurance and pay as you go phone, utilities, no internet(using my neighbors wifi) no cable, and that's okay, so losing $44 worth of MY groceries would devestate me and really put me back, if a hungry person asked, I would have given him some food.

Could you imagine if that happened to someone or a family who spent their last dime on food to get them through until payday?

I appreciate the fact that your okay with it, but the person that took these items had no way of knowing that you could afford the loss. There are so many that couldn't and many that may have gone hungry because of that theft.

Stealing is never good.

I often donate to food banks with food or money. My family also buys a complete holiday dinner twice a year to a family in need.

Edited on Fri Nov-04-11 07:52 PM by Zanzoobar
It was someone else's stuff and you were watching it get stolen.

I understand that it's cool with you if someone de-bags you of groceries. But if you had watched the theft, how would you make a judgement on who needed the food more? The swiper or the guy trying to feed his kids?

What if someone had bonked the pilferer over his head? He might have thought your kids were waiting for dinner.

What if your thief traded your food at a crack house?

It just seems to me you've made a judgement when none is due, either way.

82. Maybe he's willing to take it all the way to the level that Jesus requires.
I realize that you may not be Christian, and I haven't set foot in a church in years, but I remember the radical requirements of Jesus.

In the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says:
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

41. We've all seen the man at the liquor store beggin' for your change...
What It's Like
<~i>Everlast

We've all seen the man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dreadlocked and full of mange
He ask the man for what he could spare with shame in his eyes
Get a job you fuckin' slob's all he replied

God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom who said he was in love
He said don't worry about a thing baby doll I'm the man you've been dreamin' of
But three months later he said he won't date her or return her call
And she sweared god damn if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walkin' through the doors
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner, and they call her a whore

God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad
And the down side of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup
Smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends
Yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named Max
He used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late at night
Liked to get shit faced
And keep pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight
Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45
Talked some shit
And wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it crumbles that way
At least that's what they say when you play the game

God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

To have to lose...

It's one of those songs that gives me chills, and one that's impossible to forget, and yeah, Johnny Cash would definitely approve.

Of course once I played it last night I had to listen to Springsteen's Ghost of Tom Joad in it's entirety.

He is sick, as am I. I can provide some pictures, but there is no way I can give him back what he lost.

No one in this country should ever go hungry.

pay the bills (15 hours a day, seven days a week), but I can usually come up with two clients along with my part time teaching gig, which is WAY better than many out there. I would have felt exactly as you did. If they would have stolen the iPad that I usually have with me and not the groceries I would have been upset...but we're talking about FOOD here! Someone was willing to risk arrest for food! That's desperate, not greedy or stupid. Whatever happened to critical thinking and compassion around here?

89. A good attitude - sorry for the loss of your fav bags
Favorite tote bags are no joke - we have these AMAZING reusable bags from heifer.org (please consider them for your holiday gift giving - you can give the gift of a flock of chickens, or a goat etc to help end hunger)

We have a huge insulated bag and 2 mesh ones that are sturdy and easily the 3 bags will hold a cartload of food. When I went to order more for a friend, they were no longer on the site and I told my husband. You would have thought I took away his birthday - he was upset for days (claiming that from now on, only approved family members could use the bags - ha!) until he wrote to heifer about getting some more. I think he is going to buy a stash (only $15) and hide them.

Sigh - the remarks of some sadden me. If the groceries were so valuable (as some have hypothesized what if the OP was equally poor and used his last $$ on groceries) then I am sure the car door would have been locked, regardless of the neighborhood.

So get over the what-ifs, the intent was to say that times are so hard food is more valuable than anything else in the car (or even stealing the car itself).

Good for you for taking what for some people is a crime and seeing it for what it was - humanity.

100. You're right
Sometimes you have to think about the needs of others over yourself. I have been unemployed/underemployed for 3+ years (had a period of trying to be self-employed before that but it didn't work out). I am lucky enough that my two vehicles are paid for, B of A hasn't managed to kick me out of my house yet and I have a couple of good training/job prospects in the works. Still I am getting food stamps and heating fuel aid and unemployment so I obviously am doing alright but not great. A guy came up to me in the parking lot at the local dollar store asking if I could spare some money so he could get gas and look for a job. My initial reaction was to point out that I was unemployed too and didn't have any money. After talking to my wife we decided that even in our current financial state we could at least gather up all the change we had in our pockets and the car, so we did that and found the guy walking sown the street and pulled over and gave it to him. He thanked us and pointed out he had been looking for work for awhile and wasn't having any luck. Boy can I identify with that. Wish I could have done more for him but maybe just people showing that they care a little bit will help him out.

110. I was burglarized one Christmas years ago.
This was back near the end of Bush Sr's term. My daughter was only 3 or 4 at the time, and we'd gone to my brother's house overnight for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day.

When we got home and discovered the theft, the items missing were:
1 Christmas ornament off our little tree;
1 new stuffed toy;
1 blanket;
1/2-gallon of milk and every bit of nonperishible food.

Someone with a child, hungry, took only what they needed.

The wrapping paper from the stuffed toy (a gorgeous life-sized white cat) had obviously been torn off by a child and was in a heap on the floor. My child said, "She just wanted a Christmas present, too," and I hugged her with tears in my eyes. She understood even then.

Although we had little to spare back then, I wished I'd left some cash laying around.

Thanks for sharing your story, DainBramaged. At the very least, you've inspired some new donations to food pantries and help organizations.

Many of our food banks are overwhelmed and understocked because of high unemployment .
The grocery store where I work we do not have sales, so pull all our coded perishables a day early. The local food bank picks up daily.

We have a great canvas bag if you want to pm me a mailing address I will send you two to replace those you lost.

I like to take this opportunity to post a link to any soldier. My husband and I pick a unit and send care packages twice a year. The service men and women really appreciate getting them.

144. Thanks We have been doing this since 2003, it is very dear to our heart.
Hopefully we will not be doing it much longer. One of the first units we sent packages too did not have a decent water supply which meant no showers let alone a hot one.

122. Well done!
I would have done the same. It infuriates and saddens me that in our extremely wealthy country, so many people are forced to suffer for the greed of so few.

125. Thanks for this. I've been so jaded lately....
It warms my heart to be reminded that there are people like you out there. My mother put out groceries last year for the Postal Food Drive and someone stole it. We felt the same way about it. If they are stealing food, they probably need it. We give a set amount to the Food Bank each pay period(well my BF does, I am unemployed) But, in honor of your understanding, I too made an extra $25 donation to our community food bank today! May peace and love find you where ever you are.:toast:

140. For all he knew, your entire family would be hungry for a week because of him.
Why didn't he just take *some* of the groceries, and leave the rest for you and your family?

I guess he's not quite as saintly as some here are making out.

142. Sorry to hear about it
and yes, there are way too many people out there who need food that aren't getting it. I believe that a person can't get food stamps, either, if they don't have an address--IIRC, that's why a lot of shelters are allowing people who are homeless to use the shelter address for welfare and FS reasons.

Hope you got a chance to get more groceries, and I have to chuckle at the thought of your cashier wondering why you are re-buying all the same things that you just bought. That would be a sight to see. :)

Take care,
Mary
