Miss Representation to be re-aired this Saturday on OWN.
Edited on Wed Nov-09-11 12:04 PM by redqueen
About The Film

Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.

Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.

It’s Time To Represent The Real Me

The film Miss Representation exposes how American youth are being sold the concept that women and girls’ value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. It’s time to break that cycle of mistruths.

In response we created MissRepresentation.org, a call-to-action campaign that seeks to empower women and girls to challenge limiting labels in order to realize their potential.

We are uniting individuals around a common, meaningful goal to spark millions of small actions that ultimately lead to a cross-generational movement to eradicate gender stereotypes and create lasting cultural and sociological change.

How We Are Making A Difference Together

Using social media, women and girls are speaking out, telling their stories and influencing change. Men and boys are standing up to sexism, countering hyper-masculinity and championing women as leaders.

Schools are using the Miss Representation‘s Curriculum to educate youth around media literacy and to inspire and activate students to make change.

Communities are hosting screenings and discussions to shift the cultural mindset around gender and end sexism.

Consumers are using their power to celebrate positive media and advertising, and challenge negative media and advertising.

I hope many people will watch this weekend. The media's constant portrayal of women as primarily sexualized objects causes real harm.

1. I'll be watching.
Sounds good. Will also DVR for my nieces who are 10, 11 and 12. The mother of the oldest one starting buying her thongs (panties) at age 6! Step-mom (my sis-in-law) has tried her hardest not to let the kid "grow up too fast". I do worry about her...

2. You might want to watch it by yourself first,
so that you know if/when you'll need to fast forward a few things. There are some very ugly and disturbing truths addressed in this documentary.

4. I'm taping it.
Thanks. It's on my calendar.

I missed the first 20 minutes last time it was on & I didn't have a tape at hand. It is an amazing film that all adults should see - men & women.

And maybe once per day till it's on.

Sorry for annoying those who would rather things not change. But thanks for the unrecs... it just confirms that this is necessary.

I hope lots of people watch. It really is groundbreaking stuff. I know people will disagree with some of the points raised, but it's well worth watching just the same.

12. I agree.
I think everyone should watch it, at least once they reach a certain age, once they're able to understand and process the material without possibly being traumatized by it.

29. Yeah...
it's hard to have any hope on this subject. Time and time again the response is overwhelming. The status quo is awesome, shut up.

Have you read any excerpts from Pornland, that book defendandprotect has been talking about? Depressing stuff.

Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 09:33 AM by seabeyond
sexual conflict that so many of them are truly sick of it before they even got old enough to have sex. they are putting it off longer and longer. us older adults are truly fucking up that world for them, too.... yea us.

as they see more and more how much it messes up not just the boys, but our girls that are going to effect their relationship, cause more pain, i think they may pull back for self preservation on their own

28. Thanks for that... that's 11 EST tomorrow morning.
I hope you enjoy it. I know that not everyone will agree with everything that is presented in the movie, but the important thing, I think, is to at least open up a new kind of awareness of and discussion of these issues.

33. It's not just the film, either...
the organization is raising awareness and giving people concrete steps to take in order to change the way society views and treats women.

I have to say I was a lot more excited about this after I first saw it than I am now. But it's a start, at least.
