CLEVELAND - Ohio's largest county is defending its use of plainclothes detectives to deliver layoff notices to county workers at home, a practice that law enforcement and other observers described as unusual and even cold-hearted.
"These are men who serve warrants to people," noted one Cuyahoga County clerk who said she was startled when two sheriff's detectives brought a pink slip to her door earlier this month. She asked The Plain Dealer not to use her name for fear it might hurt her job prospects with other employers.
Detectives were sent to the homes of eight workers who were vacationing or absent for other issues and were included in a layoff of 33 employees from the county fiscal office in Cleveland.
The others were given the news at the office.
