1. This civil disobedience is SO SO important to our country.
This is the first truly important thing that has happened in DECADES. It is peaceful, and yet it's the first time the corporate media has been unable to ignore the majority.

CNN is reporting this non-stop now. It's also showing the tranquility and peace of Occupiers. And the media is forced to use MILLIONS of its advertiser's funding to report Occupy movements.

This wonderful, wonderful leaderless movement is growing. It's growing in cities, campuses, towns, everywhere. It's growing EXPONENTIALLY.

My sister said this the other day: "Corporations and their lackeys are wondering how so many people have time to protest. How could they not? Corporations have taken their jobs away and impoverished them. What have they got to lose?"

I marvel at the amazing way ALL media is now reporting Occupy Movements thorughout the nation. WE who are unable to be present at Occupy protests, must do something, make calls, write, donate what we can to wherever.

3. We must make sure EVERYONE WE KNOW is well aware of what's going on with Occupy movements
WE must add ourselves to the movement, even if we can't be present, by spreading the message ourselves.

I put some quotes about the Occupy movements on my e-mail signature.

In fact, I need an extraordinary quote about it and am looking for one now.

here, the elderly keep being threatened with reductions in Medicare, our infrastructure is falling apart at the seams, STUDENTS CAN'T GET A FRIKKIN' JOB, etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum.

5. What a dilemma for the corporate media
Edited on Sun Nov-13-11 07:24 AM by Gman
They cover the news that draws viewers and increases ratings so that the media can charge more for advertising for the corporations who caused the movement to begin with. The word ends up being spread and the corporations foot the bill for what will be their own undoing.

Pretty cool, I think

8. If they don't get the hell out of the streets in 3-4 hours
then they are going to lose public support. Their right to free speech does not include the right to impede traffic. It doesn't matter to me if they wanna flood the streets at 5 am but they have no right to do that in full traffic at 8 or 9 am.

9. You CLEARLY don't know what civil disobedience is...

"Peaceful, lawful protest -- if it is effective – is innately disruptive of "business as usual. That is why it is effective." --Naomi Wolf

---------

Mohamas Ghandi is the best known for his civil disobedience, which brought a radical break for India from Great Britain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_disobedience

---------

Lastly, there IS a right in the Constitution for peaceful ASSEMBLY:

The United States constitution explicitly provides for 'the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances'" in the First Amendment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_assembly

---------

I'm tired of people being scared of doing anything that might upset the powers that control this country. It's precisely all that fear that got us into this horrible economic situation. Time to shed that fear you're expressing. GET SOME COURAGE, FOR GOD'S SAKES!

15. Oh save it
Impeding the streets while some people, perhaps ER doctors and nurses (who regularly work weekends) need to get to work is hardly peaceful or organized.

There are ways to get your message across without obstructing the streets. The protesters in Zuccotti Park are doing just fine. You don't see them jumping into the street and deliberately confronting the NYPD. Regardless of what you MAY think Sarah, people who aren't part of the movement but that are sympathetic to it are going to be TURNED OFF by this move. If these protesters are still in the streets at 8 am after the police have given them repeated warnings to move then most won't be sympathetic.

21. You probably voted for Nader, didn't you?
Both times?

I wouldn't vote for that racist piece of shit ever.

I don't want to join the Republicans. Just because I don't condone street-blocking doesn't make me a Republican. I've voted Democratic my entire life, straight-party line.

This isn't a revolution, first of all. I fully expect most of the protesters to go away once the weather turns shitty.

I do know one thing, however. Making the news for clashing with police is not going to engender more public support for the movement. If you don't believe me, let's see how much news Portland gets, and then check polls on support for OWS among the American public in 2 weeks time. My guess is that support will have fallen.

You'd think that all this energy going into street-blocking would be BETTER served at volunteering for the local Obama campaign office (I'm sure there's one in Portland), which is what I'm putting MY time toward.

23. Nader is a horse's ass. However, I see that even Obama is powerless to change the shit
going on in this country for the past few decades. So you know what? This unstoppable movement will change things for all of us. Already the corporate media, which previously REFUSED to broadcast anything that went against the powers-that-be, is now being forced to report this movement, which, of course, only gives it free advertisement and causes it to grow exponentially.

GROW SOME COURAGE!

22. Why don't they just go to a park like Occupy St. Louis did?
The public would understand them occupying a public park, because that doesn't impede traffic. This attempt to get more media coverage (which is clearly what this is, because visible cheers went up when the protesters saw they were be covered on CNN) will backfire. We need more peaceful protesting in parks and less attention whoring.

32. India also lacked a democracy or republic through which to effect change
They were protesting brutal authoritarian rule. The solution of those in Portland seems to be to impede streets to effect change rather than trying to effect it at the voting booth. The Tea Party may be whackjobs but they understood that to get the change THEY wanted, they had to turn out and vote for their nutjob candidates. We need to do the same for OUR progressive candidates and focus on getting them ELECTED. Clashing with police in the middle of streets turns off middle of the road voters as well as a majority of liberals voters, most of whom are part of the 99%.

which is why you saw them get off the street. They know that impeding traffic wouldn't exactly warm the hearts of frustrated drivers.

And they do not have the right to impede public roadways. Please direct me to some case law or a statute that would allow protesters to block traffic to make a political point. Do not cite Gandhi as someone else on here did to justify the street-blocking. I want a real citation because you claimed they would have the right to do this.

43. You just failed
Predictable, however.

The First Amendment does not give you the right to impede the travel of others. The position consistent with the First Amendment is to allow peaceful assembly on the sidewalks to ensure that traffic is not impeded. You can't show me a single U.S. court decision that is still good law which compels your wacky interpretation of the First Amendment.

Is it your position that the protesters have the right to stay in the streets for as long as they want and if the police try to remove them then they are violating the free speech rights of the protesters? Let's get you on the record, because your interpretation of the First Amendment is strikingly different from the interpretation that I learned in law school.

44. More:
Edited on Sun Nov-13-11 10:15 AM by NOMOREDRUGWAR
http://www.aclufl.org/pdfs/right_to_protest_brochure.pdf

"The First Amendment does not protect speech that is
combined with the violation of established laws such as
trespassing, disobeying or interfering with a lawful order by a
police officer.
"

"If you endanger others while protesting, you can be
arrested. A protest that blocks vehicular or pedestrian traffic
is illegal without a permit."

Where's their permit to block the street?

Here's what they can do:

"Generally, you have the right to distribute
literature, hold signs and collect petition
signatures while on sidewalks or in front of
government buildings as long as you are not
disrupting other people, forcing passersby to
accept leaflets or causing traffic problems."

Get it? I don't expect a response but we apparently have a real problem with citizens that don't understand the limits of the First Amendment. You don't have a right to block traffic on public streets and you don't have a right to protest on private property unless you have permission of the owner.
