Bank of America alert. . .?

I've not had a B of A account in a couple decades. When I lived in CA they used to hold my out of state checks for ten business days.

So when I returned back East I was less than enamored with their services and I used a much smaller bank.

This morning I found this in my inbox. . . (their logo didn't copy to this post)


"Online Banking Alert

Dear valued customer :
During our usual security enhancement protocol, we observed multiple login attempt error while login in to your online banking account. We have believed that someone other than you is trying to access your account for security reasons, we have temporarily suspend your account and your access to online banking and will be restricted if you fail to update.
To get start :
> Log on to https://www.bankofamerica.com/privacy/update.jsp

Please Note:
Always look for your SiteKey® before entering your Passcode."

So I went to my small bank's site to make sure I still had access and everything seemed okay. Yet one often is unaware of when the small banks get swallowed up by the big ones.

Just wondering if any of their real "valued customers" are having their accounts frozen or if any of their lost disgruntled former customers are receiving this alert as well. My account with Bank of America was closed long before I had an e-mail address or internet access. Is this entirely bogus spam or are they locking accounts because of the massive transfers from last weekend ?

I did see that B of A was jerking people around with their unemployment checks last week. But this seems really bizarre.

1. Unfortunately, my mortgage is

with BOA. I get the same email alerts in my in-box. I refuse to open them, they are a scam. What my first clue was is the statement there have been numerous log-in attempts. I rarely, if ever, go to my on-line account.

I would just ignore them; however, if you ARE concerned, don't open that email but call BOA Customer Service directly.

4. Looks more like a phishing attack than anything actually from BofA

My first guess would be that this has nothing to do with your old BofA account, it's just a generic e-mail scam sent out to millions of people, hoping to trick people with BofA accounts into turning over their account log-in credentials.

6. That is one of the many messages that can be found when looking for

They are looking to harvest account/log in information. Don't go to the linked site in the email. If it is really to you, it will be addressed to you, and not to 'valued customer.'

13. I just took another look at the e-mail.

The really creepy thing is that though in the body of the e-mail it addresses me as a "valued customer" in the recipient line it has my abbreviated nick name, not my legal name or my e-mail address.

My nick name is on my business card.

Goodness knows where those have ended up over the past twenty years.

8. What you posted isn't a link - it's a java script. It's intended to collect your login and password.

Never - EVER - click on a link like that. Of course, the fact that you haven't had a BoA account for many years should have tipped you off that this was a scam.....

Any legit email from a bank or whomever knows your name.

Plain and simple phishing attempt.

10. Scam. I get them frequently and have not had

a BOA acct in years. If you looked at the actual HTML behind
that message, you would probably see a different URL in the
href tag for that link.

Yet I did wonder if under the ruse of increased security, they were really freezing accounts.

With the debit card scam and charging the unemployed for check cashing privileges.

Wouldn't put anything past 'em at this juncture.

15. Another tip-off: the language

An American bank can be expected to communicate in fairly good English. This email doesn't even come close.
