Police: Occupy San Francisco protesters attack officers
SAN FRANCISCO -- One San Francisco police officer was slashed by a razor and another had his uniform torn and cheek cut in a clash with Occupy San Francisco protesters Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

About 3:30 p.m., near the Embarcadero and Broadway, police attempted to prevent marching demonstrators from blocking the intersection where MUNI light rail tracks are located.

A female protester emerged from the crowd and an "exacto razor blade attached to a pen or pencil-like object," San Francisco police said in an email.

"The female slashed the inside of the officer's hand and ran back into the crowd before the officer had time to realize he was cut," police said.

A few instigators like this could be the downfall of the movement. I think the crowd should help police identify assholes like this.

1. not only that - build alliances - are cops really the enemy? Ive hesitated to say this

because maybe things are different elsewhere - but I find it hard to believe that cops elsewhere are really all that different from the ones here in Wis. Don't they have a unionista side that can be appealed to? All I can say is that strategically, having cops & firefighters on our side is priceless - and something that no one wants to jeopardize. Have to keep on message - eyes on the prize. (Where the people in the crowd that they allowed this to happen? )

(PS - editted to add - alliance with cops/police unions does not preclude civil disobedience or acts of resistance - it just means staying focused.)

2. A very misleading headline.

This was obviously not a protestor. Some around here like to insist that these people can't be apprehended by protestors because 'that would be assault'. The unfortunate reality is that if proactive measures are not taken, these people will seriously harm the movement.

3. Ignore it and it will go away
seems to be the consensus. Threads like this seem to die quickly. Things are starting to get out of hand and inaction can only hurt.

These people came out of, and melted into, the crowd. The general public will associate them with the Occupiers.

4. That would be bad. We can't ignore how they characterize these agents as
part of OWS.

We have to get a very difficult concept for most people to understand 'mainstreamed'.

The OWS is a non-violent entity. Anything violent is not part of it. Kind of like how nothing that distinctly harms innocent civilians can be considered 'Anonymous'. It's an idea, not a group of people.
