(snip)

For much of the time since they took over from Mr Mubarak, the generals have been looking in earnest for a way to maintain their control beyond the election of a new parliament, the drafting of a new constitution and the election of a president.

In the meantime, they have increasingly been behaving like an authoritarian junta, enjoying absolute power with no checks or balances. They have appointed a cabinet and a prime minister who are weak and beholden to their wishes.

They have tortured detainees and tried thousands of civilians before military tribunals, according to rights groups.

It is the biggest of all Arab Spring ironies. Egypt's revolution miraculously succeeded in toppling Mr Mubarak's 29-year regime in 18 tumultuous days of protests only to pave the way for a military dictatorship...

3. Welcome to American style democracy
Hey Egypt...isn't democracy great? You fought for all of those rights, only to be given two horrible choices to pick from. Congrats, you get to decide who's orders you want to follow.

Perhaps the Arab spring shouldn't have ended quite so soon...

4. Egypt
This suits the US just fine. They don't want a Civilian regime if it is going to change the status quo too far from the Mubarak Regime. In fact most of the conservative right are not happy that Mubarak and Khadaffy are out, they really don't care about freedom for Arabs if they see that it might affect change or alter Israels M.O.

6. Like no one could have predicted this.
Why would people who crave and hold power want to give power up?

If you know your Egyptian history (old or new)you wil know why the army have had the power for the last 45 of the last 60 year or so.. Since the king was deposed in 1953, the Army in one way or another have ruled Egypt, for most of the history, with few or non sivilian oversight. Even the former President of Egypt, was from the ranks of the army, and was made the leader of the country, long before the "sivilians" tok over in the 1980s...
