https://www.facebook.com/OccupyBruges has its first monthly event the 20th of November in the Albertpark, with a Speakers Corner, some family entertainment, and a General Assembly supported by the various Occupations and the Indignados.
Their press release will go as follows: (DU has the primeur on this, because I so deeply respect the american people for waking up, and because DU has been ahead of the curve so often)
No leaders
Occupy Bruges is a loose assembly of citizens who no longer support the system of predatory capitalism that operates to the advantage of a handful at the expense of the large majority. Following the lead of Occupy Wall Street and anonymous, we have no leaders - since every voice is equal.
Silence no more
The elite is afraid. The people are angry. The media is silent at a time they should be doing their job objectively. They have ignored the Occupy movement like they have ignored the continuing revolution is Iceland. They are now trying to ridicule us like they did with the Indignados, who carried the arab spring from Northern-Africa to the heart of Europe. Logical, given the importance of Belgium to the financial elite.
It is time the democratic legitimacy of our leaders, who want to put the future of our children at risk, is questioned. It is our constitutional right to do so in public space, without asking for permission. That does not mean we cannot and will not cooperate in the interest of public order, quite the opposite. To have her or his voice heard, all traditional channels aside, is the right of every citizen, when she or he feels he is no longer represented.
General Assembly
The movement is much more than a vague "against", it is also a clear "pro". For looking for alternatives together, via participative democracy, of which a General Assembly is a prime example. The fact this process does not yield instant results, is normal. Translating the wish of the people was the job of our leaders, and it is their failure that gives us the opportunity to fill the vacuüm with the voice of the people.
This first general assembly will be in the Albert-park, between the train station of Bruges and 't Zand, at the statue, from 2 till 5 pm.
In case of bad weather there is an alternative venue.
Press Contact
The movement has neither spokespeople nor organizers - since everyone's opinion has equal weight.
