OH Please!!! Secret Service Now Authorized To Protect Herman Cain
The United States Secret Service has confirmed that it has been authorized by Department of Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano to offer protection for GOP candidate Herman Cain. The Secret Service will not reveal the exact reason that the Cain campaign has requested its protection. Although threats against the candidate can be a possible factor in asking for protection, any candidate can receive protection if they have “achieved prominence.”

1. Just because he is a fool doesn't mean he isn't a high profile candidate for president.
I'm sure he is getting his own share of threats from skinheads.

31. He is special only because he is running for president after RFK we decided to protect them
I don't understand what your problem with it is. Not to say that we do have a well functioning democracy, but in theory if we want one then I think protecting the security of people who choose to run for the highest office in the land, if there is a credible threat, is only rational.

taxpayers money! This ignorant man will NEVER be Presidential material, NEVER.

that once the debates and primaries had concluded, that they were eligible for a Secret Service detail...not during the GOP debates...

He's rich enough to hire his own bodyguards. It's not the taxpayer's problem.

Obama Placed Under Secret Service Protection
By ANAHAD O'CONNOR

The decision to assign agents to protect Senator Barack Obama, a full nine months before the Democratic primary, is the earliest the Secret Service has ever issued security detail to a presidential candidate. Russ Knocke, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, said today he could not comment on whether the decision was made in response to a specific threat against Mr. Obama or his family, but that several criteria were taken into account before the authorization was made.

Eric Zahren, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said the agency was not aware of any specific threat against Senator Obama of Illinois.

In an interview yesterday with Jeff Zeleny today, Michelle Obama, the senator’s wife, said the Secret Service protection underscored the notion that “we are moving to the next level” of the presidential campaign. The 2008 race is accelerated in every respect, she said, including unusually large crowds and attention.

“Security was one of many issues that I have and will have in the course of this campaign,” said Mrs. Obama, who has talked openly about fearing for her husband’s safety. “But I’ve thought through in my mind all the possible scenarios and how we’re going to handle it.”

9. "Oh, Please" be damned!
With Hermie, I'd a lot rather avoid an assassination, for a multitude of reasons, starting with the fact that violent approaches to social change don't succeed where peaceful ones do, and the last thing we need is a black martyr on the right.

10. I assume they have their reasons. Let's keep him safe.
Let the Secret Service do their thing, and let Cain do his thing. He's doing a great job ruining his candidacy, so he'll be back home in a few weeks, talking about what might have been, and we can concentrate on the remaining riders in the clown car.

And per precedent, he has to be given that protection until he ends his campaign. Homeland Security did what it was supposed to do.

Hillary Clinton, Pat Robertson, Jesse Jackson all received Secret Service protection at similar times in the cycle. The man is a major party candidate for president, not hard for me to understand.

Herman Cain to get Secret Service protection

<snip>
Then-Sen. Barack Obama received Secret Service protection on May 3, 2007. Then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, who also sought the presidency in the 2008 cycle, already had Secret Service protection because he husband had recently been president; her official campaign protection began on November 29, 2007.

Among the candidates who have gotten Secret Secret protection are Rev. Jesse Jackson (starting November 23, 1987 and November 10, 1983), Pat Robertson (December 1, 1987) and Sen. Edward Kennedy (October 25,1979). Six candidates received Secret Service protection in the 1976 campaign cycle.

Congress authorized protection for major presidential candidates after Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968, as he was seeking the presidency. A congressional panel signs off on all requests for Secret Service protection.

40. Candidate Obama started receiving Secret Service protection in May 2007,
which was the earliest for any candidate, ever. That's a full 18 months before the election. Whether you like Cain or not, he is currently a major candidate for POTUS and is deserving of protection.
