What if everyone had a white T shirt with the letters 99% on it.

:)

1. ... that's what the representative from LA said on KO last nite, too.
It's not all a big conspiracy. Sometimes there's actual communication between the "two sides" beforehand to 'set the ground rules.

2. San Diego occupiers also discussed safe bridge protest with the cops.
It's what responsible protesters do.

Don't you love improv?

7. Yes, but if your arrest had been pre-arranged then your head might not ...
have been busted.

;-)

5. If everyone had a white T shirt with the letters 99% on it.
Then 99% of the population would have a white T shirt. :eyes:

8. Question, would they have been handled differently if police thought ...
they had arranged their arrest with the police department in advance?

9. I don't think so.
I think the cops look at the protesters in two ways. Either they are being lawful or unlawful and the cops go after the unlawful protesters or what they are perceiving as being unlawful. Some cops get out of hand like officer Baloney when he pepper sprayed two girls. But their are bad apples in every group.

11. Those that pre-arranged their arrest with the NYPD did something that was unlawful...
to trigger a symbolic arrest.

Bottom line, always pre-arrange your arrest :)

6. protest arrests are usually pre-arranged to avoid violence
It's just kind of a agreement. "We're marching on this bridge"
police: "It's illegal"
Protesters "yes, we know"
The police give 3 warnings and everyone who remains in the "illegal" area, which is the area without a permit, is arrested. You can choose to walk or be carried. You can safely stay without arrest until that 3rd warning. No violence. That's how it has worked for years. Until Occupy, that is.
Occupy scares them.

10. Can anyone arrange their arrest so they are not thrown to the ground...
if they cross the line?

15. Did you listen to the BBC piece? They had negotiated with NYPD in advance...
told them where they would be (white T shirts) and said they wanted to be observed. On the Ed show he said they sent someone down to film the arrests, for some reason I doubt most people would be able to do that.

Almost sounds like a 1% arrest.

:D

18. prior to the occupy
yes, it was easy. It was all very cordial with both sides knowing a simple arrest was coming. Apparently that has been thrown out with the occupy movement. Like I said, I think someone is very afraid of us. They know if they continue the simple cordial arrests, that we will keep coming back for more. So now we are getting the super deluxe treatment. Sometimes it's quite a surprise. Sometimes it's a cherry, sometimes a bloody head.

12. Lamest development to come from OWS yet...
I have no respect for any protester that pre-arranges their arrest.

What kind of establishment-dick-down-their-throat organization brought this to the table?

Click on...
"Exclusive: Labor leader arrested at OWS protest..."

These were not the same people occupying Zuccotti Park.

17. One that understands the purpose of civil disobedience isn't to be physically abused by the police.
The objective is to overwhelm the judicial system, from jails to courts, and force the other side to offer concessions in the face of unsustainable tactics of oppression. Getting beat-up and bloody helps garner public support, but it isn't the end goal.

19. pre arranged arrest have been the norm for years
this occupy movement is the first one that hasn't been. Well, actually many times the time is known. Like at central park. Park closes at 1am. All there know arrests will begin right after 1am. All who chose to remain, know they will be arrested. It's more or less prearranged.

That does not include arrest happening along the march route. The people pre arranging arrest are simply saying they understand the police will arrest them yet they still will not move. They know these arrest will come.

I was not there at the bridge, but I will bet that originally they were not going to be allowed on the bridge and the ones arrested followed the "I know what I am doing in illegal and I know I will be arrested" meme. But it was too large to stop them so the others just went ahead and crossed the bridge. I had heard earlier that there was a sign on the bridge informing them of the arrest. Saying ok to the arrest is the peaceful way to not let it get out of hand. (or hopefully anyway)
