Reverend Martin Luther King tried very hard himself, and worked diligently to convince his followers to abide by such rules.

In order for a movement like OWS to be successful it must, in the long run, be seen as unimpeachable, unstoppable, and always on the side of justice.

Any lashing out or violent retaliation will just give fodder to the opposition to build their case against your cause and will ultimately topple it.

One reason that many Democratic leaders shun association with the movement at this point is that it has not yet proven its resilience in the face of the attacks against it. From what I've seen the conduct of the majority has been impressive overall, but there are some few who continue to be "rotters" (not to mention the lies perpetrated by Faux News and others of the "RW Wurlitzer media").

Even Elizabeth Warren, who first endorsed the cause, has now backed away to some degree, and this is certainly not good.

Following Gandhi's rules to the letter actually could vouchsafe the movement's success. This remains to be seen, however. Peace!

This line is probably the best summary of Gandhi's philosophy of satyagraha as you can get in 16 words. But there's no evidence that the Great Soul ever said this.

We don't know where this quote came from, but it is strikingly similar to something that the trade unionist Nicholas Klein gave in a 1914 address to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in Baltimore:

"First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you. And that, is what is going to happen to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America."
