UC Davis Faculty Association Board Calls for Katehi’s Resignation

DFA Board Calls for Katehi’s Resignation

The DFA Board calls for the immediate resignation of Chancellor Katehi. The Chancellor’s authorization of the use of police force to suppress the protests by students and community members speaking out on behalf of our university and public higher education generally represents a gross failure of leadership.

Given the recent use of excessive force by police against “occupy” protestors at UC Berkeley and elsewhere, the Chancellor must have anticipated that, by authorizing police action, she was effectively authorizing their use of excessive force against peaceful UCD student protestors. The Chancellor’s role is to enable open and free inquiry, not to suppress it.

We also call for a policy that will end the practice of forcibly removing non-violent student, faculty, staff, and community protestors by police on the UC Davis campus. The University of California should be taking a leadership role in encouraging the exercise of free speech, not in suppressing it.

1. but didn't Katehi just call for an investigation? Seems like some double talk
if she really did order the force.

2. She's been exposed, so she's asking for *90-day* investigations,
long enough to sweep it all under the rug and get everyone to forget--or so she hopes.

10. She called for an investigation only after she realized her job was on the line.

But she has done a big service to the movement.
The viral video will deepen the commitment of the committed and draw in more supporters.
This thing is here to stay until we see major changes.

7. We should be calling for the cops to resign -
While I don't approve of the Chancellor ordering the area cleared, it was the cops who decided to use pepper spray on peaceful protesters. They could have simply picked them up and carried them off in a nonviolent fashion.

But the officers violated their trust to protect and serve, and they need to lose their jobs. At least the one in that video, and any others who behaved like pigs.

14. "Police used the pepper spray after they were surrounded...
...There was no way out of that circle".

----a line straight out of the Kent State Handbook of Excuses, even less true than the original,

16. On at least one of the videos
The sprayer steps over the protesters. The "no way out of the circle" lie should cost the chief her job.

I wrote the UC Berkley PD requesting her resignation pointing out she was lying or speaking with authority while oblivious.
