21. Yes, changing hearts/minds is the goal. Nonviolence is not focused on punishment.

The roots of nonviolence is compassion and a recognition of ourselves in others. There is a peace in this acceptance.

By shining a light on her leadership, or lack thereof, it may be decided that she should step down. I'm not
suggesting that this would be inappropriate or unjustified. All I'm saying is that our intentions are important
and if we only want revenge and punishment then we are replicating rather than changing the systemic problems

revenge or manipulation then I would not call it nonviolence. It is then simply passive aggression.

When I was growing up in Queens, what we then called "mace" was a common weapon. You could buy it in any little corner bodega, and people used it. A lot. Not as a "self-defense" weapon, but as a straight up weapon. I'd been maced several times just in the course of the normal urban warfare that was NYC in the late 80's and early 90's. It fucking hurts, and it chokes you. And it hurts.

Later, when I lived on the West Coast and was involved in direct action as part of the anti (really, alternative)-globalization protests, I had the chance to have my ass in the tear gas a few times. I also got the full pepper spray treatment once. It fucking hurts like a motherfucker. I don't know how else to convey it. You want to tear your face off. It hurts.

I know what it takes to sit there and take it, again and again. Those kids have brass balls and uteruses, or whatever you want to call it. Brass. Fucking gleaming courageous heroes. Reminds me of the old ee cummings:
