Interview with a pepper-sprayed UC Davis student

22-year-old UC Davis student W. (name withheld by request) was one of the students pepper-sprayed at point-blank range Friday by Lt. John Pike while seated on the ground, arms linked and silent.

W. tells Boing Boing that Pike sprayed them at close range with military-grade pepper spray, in a punitive manner. Pike knew the students by name from Thursday night when they "occupied" a campus plaza. The students offered Pike food and coffee and chatted with him and other officers while setting up tents. On Friday, UC Davis chancellor Linda Katehi told students they had to remove their #OWS tents for unspecified "health and safety" reasons.

"Move or we're going to shoot you," Pike is reported to have yelled ...

6. Another thread had a post claiming that Pike makes $100K a year and 40% of that is student fees.

I didn't have time to get verification from the poster.

Anyone know if this is true?

I think that's an awful lot of money to pay a 'Records Manager' in a cash strapped state.

If 40% of his wages are from student fees, he pepper sprayed one of his employers, in reality.

There is a disconnect within those in power and their perception of where their position and prosperity arises from.

9. I'm sure none of the culprits will lose a dime, just moved to do it again under a different title.

The only thing that matters is incarceration to these people and there is no current mechanism for corporations and bad state actors to be punished by the same system the operate.

No serious challenge to the liberty or wealth of those who harm others and the planet have been made until the OWS. As part of their declaration says:

'We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments.'

It's on the tip of my tongue, maybe on that of others, what it is we are to do about this. At this point we only have the power of truth and ideals who have long been denied. I applaud OWS and its many manifestations for deep thinking and dedication to getting our consciousness to a place that will enlighten this dark world.
