First Lady Michelle Obama Booed at NASCAR Race
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 05:19 PM by The Northerner
First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden were on hand this afternoon at the Homestead-Miami Speedway to Grand Marshall NASCAR’s Sprint Cup finale, and to support Joining Forces, an initiative to hire and train veterans. When they were introduced to kick off the race, however, loud booing could be heard above the cheers. At an event with such an apparently unifying theme, the crowd’s reaction was an ugly reminder of how personally some have taken the political divisions in our country.

However, the Associated Press reports that the First Lady and Dr. Biden did receive a standing ovation at a pre-race driver’s meeting, much more in keeping with the spirit of the occasion.

Here’s the clip, from ESPN: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/first-lady-michelle-obama-booed-at-nascar-race/

2. Nope. Consider the source of the boos.
A bunch of people who pay big bucks to sit and watch cars go round and round and round...

8. She was standing there with a military family, a soldier who had been wounded in the war,
his wife and 4 children, alongside the FLOTUS AND VFLOTUS, and these assholes thought it was appropriate to boo them? It says more about the quality of the people booing's character than anything else. At an event that is non-partisan and representing military families and their service, these NASCAR ass-hats thought booing was appropriate? It just goes to show you how far off the rail these people have gone... and it goes to show you how bad the likes of Fox News and the right-wing smere squad on talk radio has taken this country down into the gutter.

Guess its no wonder seeing that the Republican debates have shown people cheering for executions (even though some of them have been of innocent persons), wanting to allow a theoretical un-insured younger man die because he didn't possess health insurance and they wouldn't want to pay for it, and booing an United States serviceman stationed in the field for being gay, would also boo the First Lady without thinking of the repercussions of looking like out of touch assholes.

Honestly, we have got to do something about the "media" in this country. The 4th estate is failing us so badly. I notice the newest cover story on infotainment is covering an old story about some actresses death. I guess they couldn't find a new young missing blonde girl or child to obsess about while the OWS groups have been facing even harsher and brutal police tactics in a seemingly coordinated national sweep up of Occupy encampments. On top of the rubbish news on our airwaves and cable channels, we have congress trying to figure out how to stop or slow down the ability for people to share and inform themselves from online, independent sources. Essentially, the govt is trying to figure out a way in which they can shut down the Internet or, at least, control the stream of content.

Is it bad to wish that the Rapture would happen and take all the crazies to their mother ship? We would certainly be able to do much better without all the uninformed, easily manipulate boobs of people (and that goes for all nations). Hopefully, they would take their crazy leaders like Bachman and Boehner along with Koch brother types that make this world worse off for wear.

Completely classless!!! and Disgusting... Too many of these types in FL.

People travel hundreds of miles to go to these races. They're from all over the place.

9. I don't get why they would be booed. They are in noway responsible for
any of the problems we are facing. They are not even making any politically statements which would effect any out-there agenda. They are both women of great quality who have been promoting returning veterans and their families. Our First Lady has been helping to promote healthy eating for growing children. How could anyone have a problem with those causes, especially enough to boo? Is there something else they did to have any crowd act that way?

If not. This is embarrassing and shameful to hear.

tell them that if they can't be respectful of someone who is there to promote something good they need not return.

13. This is close to Limbaugh's and Coulter's home turf.

It would not surprise me in the least if they bought their tickets and bussed them in just because
they knew the two ladies would be there and there would be a national viewing audience.

I just saw a clip of the incident, and there were actually more people cheering than booing.

18. Had to be deeply embarrassing for a lot of people there.
Actually booing a first lady. Wow. That's what they want people to think of NASCAR audiences? I don't think so.

The Republicans are still in the wilderness. Their yahoos are still in charge.

19. what were they even thinking going there?
Was Obama looking for hostile crowd and couldnt find a cock fight?

Cross check NASCAR popularity with states that voted red and I'm sure there's a correlation.

Do you think that repukes go to farmer's markets, book fairs, and libraries?

25. I watched the race on TV.
Some Boos WERE audible in the background when Michele and Jill were introduced,
but there is no way to know what percentage participated.
Even Santa gets booed at NASCAR races.
Bush-the-Lesser was regularly Booed at sporting events.
There ARE assholes everywhere,
NASCAR is no exception.

I thought this is one of the smartest moves the Democratic Party has made in a long time.
Both Michele and Jill Biden REALLY did a fantastic job,
and seemed to enjoy being there.
Michele seemed to understand the cars, and the challenges faced by these the teams and drivers.
The Network gave them a BUNCH of On-the Air time,
and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Score a BIG ONE for Michele Obama and Jill Biden.

The race was superb,
with the two remaining competitors dueling for the championship down to the last lap.
Great show.
Exceptional performance.

Congrats to Tony Stewart for the WIN,
and KUDOS to Carl Edwards for the tremendous sportsmanship he showed after the race.
America NEEDS more examples of True Sportsmanship and Dignity & Grace in defeat.

Runner Up Carl Edwards has also been chosen by President Obama as a member of The Presidents Council on Fitness & Nutrition.
The Obama's are apparently more Open-Minded than many members of DU.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

The race was fun but as a Roush fan I was a bit gutted. Like you said, though, the sportsmanship shown is a good lesson for everyone.

28. I lived down there for years - Those filthy bastards would have lynched her if they could
Homestead, Florida may now be the shithole of the world, but it used to also be the tomato capital. All of the tomatoes had to be hand planted and harvested. Most of the regular workforce to do that lived to the north in two other tiny towns, Naranja and Perrine. Both were pure black towns on the west side of US-1. For the most part the white farmers who owned the land lived to the east of the road. The blacks were treated not much better than slaves all the way up into the 1970s. The KKK was rampant.

You think anything has changed in that shithole?

Too many of the latter can't even afford to attend a NASCAR race these days.

Just sayin'
