Mexico to slaughter 50,000 wild boars from U.S. invasion

(AFP) Mexican officials have unveiled plans to slaughter some 50,000 wild boars that have crossed the border from the United States and now threaten agriculture in Mexico.

The Ministry of Environment in Chihauha state said some 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of farmland in the border town of Ojinaga have been affected by the large number of feral pigs that have come from Presidio County, Texas.

"We must get rid of these European wild boars because they sleep overnight on US soil during the day and cross over to the Mexican side to feed," Ignacio Legarreta, a state official, told local media.

The boars of European origin, which were imported to Texas as pets and then replicated in the wild, have caused serious damage to the flora and fauna of the area, officials said. .............(more)

3. We've had a horrible wild hog problem here in South Texas

for the last four years. I don't blame them for trying to stop them from destroying their farmland. The hogs are dangerous and very destructive.

8. I have eaten wild pig, very good.
The wild pig population is huge.

Something like 4,000,000.

A female pig can have many babies in a year.

7. I doubt that they "were imported as pets". More likely game farms imported them for hunting.
I would think that the young sows and immature boars would be pretty good eating.

13. While domestic pigs can go feral, European Wild Boar was also imported for hunting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_boar

Also: In the 1930s, European wild hogs, "Russian boars," were first imported and introduced into Texas by ranchers and sportsmen for sport hunting. Most of these eventually escaped from game ranches and began free ranging and breeding with feral hogs. Because of this crossbreeding, there are very few, if any, true European hogs remaining in Texas.

Feral hogs are unprotected, exotic, non-game animals. Therefore, they may be taken by any means or methods at any time of year. There are no seasons or bag limits, however a hunting license and landowner permission are required to hunt them

12. The first pigs came to the americas with Columbus
during the Second Trip

They entered NORTH AMERICA via Spanish importation in Florida and Mexico...

Hey they took back Corn and Tomatoes, among other things.

Wild hogs are descendants of domestic pigs that made or found their way to freedom and a whole new biomass to prosper, just like the mustangs of the South West.
